Tutoring Over the Internet

I have found that tutoring over the Internet can be a very useful way to supplement or even replace in-person tutoring because the technology has become so good, and it is free. However there are two requirements:

• You must have a high speed Internet connection, either a DSL or cable modem
• Your computer must have a microphone and speaker (or a headset)

That's all there is to it. On the scheduled date and time, we connect over the Internet. Once connected, we can:

• Hear what each other is saying
• Share an electronic whiteboard on our computer screens that permits each of us to see what the other person is writing

To get free sound over the Internet, I use Skype software because it runs on Windows and Mac computers. You can find it here. This enables you to talk to anybody connected to the Internet for free! It also supports videoconferencing, but I do not use that feature for tutoring.

To get a free white board over the Internet, I use Vyew software because it runs in any browser on any computer. You can find it here. This enables you to share a whiteboard with anybody connected to the Internet for free! It also supports many other features that I do not typically use for tutoring.
