Gringo

H I S T O R I A S -- true tales told to the gringo

from B. at the lavamatica lunch counter

Yes, we drove south to Veracruz in that truck you saw us fixing before we left. My cousins and a friend and I.

Ah yes, that's right, I made all those burritos here the day we left. You remember that, eh? Eh.

Well, we had a good trip, thank you, until the accident there at night.

I saw my grandfather in our town -- it's been years since I have seen him -- I was only a boy when we left to come north to Tijuana. He was so happy to see us again -- three of his grandsons, imagine it -- he cried, hugging us when we got there. Such a fiesta we had! But then, the accident.

No, no, I wasn't in the truck when it happened. Our friend was driving back at night from the city where he'd gone that day. Yes, it's dangerous driving at night, but he had to do it.

It happened on a curve of the highway. A big truck -- a double tractor traila -- came around the bend in front of our friend -- the truck driver must have been going over a hundred kilometers an hour and the trailas swung out behind him, no?

So our friend sees this huge truck taking up the whole road, coming straight at him, and well, what could he do? He had to drive our little pickup right off the side of the highway to keep from hitting the big truck and its trailas. He flew off the road and rolled and tumbled down the slope -- thank God he was wearing his seat belt. If he hadn't he would have been very badly hurt. Yes he got a lot of bruises but nothing broken. No, normally he doesn't wear the seat belt -- who does? But it was night so he was being careful. Yes, he says he'll always wear it from now on, day or night.

What? No, our pickup was pretty badly screwed up. Cracked the frame, messed up the body and the wheels. We had to leave it there in our town -- no money to fix it. We came back by bus.
