Comet - Concept

Overview

The music is based on a fairy tale about the journey of the lonely man in a dark ocean. Then, one night a comet appeared in the sky. He was overjoyed. Being alone in the dark ocean for so long, he needed a friend and companion desperately. He hoped that the comet would stay guide him to the land he had been searching for. However, the comet was just passing by, neither could it answer his questions nor offer any assistance. The joy soon turned to agitation, disappointment and despair. When the comet disappeared from the sky, the man continued on his journey, once again he’s alone and adrift in the darkness..

Based on the fairy tale, the song is divided into 3 parts:

Part 1 - Dark Ocean.

The first part (measure 2 – 41) portrays the lonely man in a dark, silent , eerie ocean. It has 3 short movements:

1. Darkness (measure 2 – 17)

It’s about the sadness, fears and loneliness the man experienced day after day.

2. Storm (measure 18 – 25)

The calm of the ocean was broken by the storm, which came without warning and stopped just as abruptly. Even in the turbulence, there is a sense of sadness and a tinge of poinancy.

3. Evening (measure 27 – 41)

The storm subsided and the evening came, for a brief moment the sunset provided some solace but the cold dark night soon approached.

Part 2 – Arrival of the Comet.

In the Second part (measure 42 – 115), the comet arrived and appeared in the sky. Being all-alone for so long, he regarded the comet as a friend that he hoped for. It has 3 short movements:

1. Distant Star (measure 42 – 50)

One night a bright star appeared at the horizon. Was this a good or bad omen? ? Each night the star grew larger. .

2. Please Stay, Comet (measure 51 – 92)

Then, one night the man realized that it was the arrival of a comet. The comet shone brightly in the sky, lighting up the ocean with a mysterious glow. For a moment he was not alone anymore and he was filled with joy and a sense of well being. "Oh comet, please stay steadfast, comet" he said, " I dont care what the world would say, just stay and be my guiding star". See verse1 and 2 of the lyrics.

3. Rapture (measure 93 – 115)

As he got more and more excited, he began to dance. Like a man in a trance, he started to talk to the comet. He hoped that the comet would provide company, guidance, and answers to many questions that he needed. Please refer to verse 3 of the lyrics.

Part 3 – Disillusioned.

In the Third part (measure 116 – 196), the comet remained silent and slowly moved away each day. The man’s joy soon turn to agitation, disappointment and finally despair. It has 5 short movements:

1. Agitation (measure 116 -137)

The man realised that the comet was just passing by, a traveller without destionation in the emptiness of the outer space. "Are you too destined to vanish, disintegrate and turn to dust?" he asked, "What is the meaning of existence if existence is just transitory? If life is just a journey, why is the destination a mystery? Is there a higher being, watching and passing judement on us? ". Refer to verse 4 of the lyrics

2. Disappointment (measure 138 – 156)

As the comet was heading down the horizon, the man asked in vain, "Oh comet, do you have a message for all the lost souls crying in despair and struggling in the rubbish dump of the soceity, forgotten by the others? Are we hust an accidental creation of the forces of nature? ". refer to verse 5 of the lyrics.

3. Despair (measure 157 – 174)

In the distant the sound of thunders rumbled. Would his frail body and raft survive the approaching storm? Would he be washed away like the ants and the dust in the rain? refer to verse 6 of the lyrics.

4. Alone Again

The comet had no answers. Like the man, it did not know its own final destination of a journey, which was seemingly purposeless and doomed from the start. Refer to verse 7 of the lyrics

 5. Darkness (measure 175 – 196)

With his questions unanswered, the man continued his journey. Once again, adrift in the darkness. This is a repeat of the opening sequence from measure 2-18.
