ABC.com character bio:

Dr. Maria Santos arrived in Pine Valley in 1993. Writer Edmund Grey asked Maria out with the hope of getting over his love for Brooke English. On their first date, Edmund and Maria shared a wonderful evening at a rodeo bar. Maria brought out the lighter side of Edmund, and helped him forget Brooke. After a while, they began developing intense feelings for each other, but Edmund continued to help Brooke every time she needed a shoulder to cry on, which made Maria cautious and jealous. Eventually, Edmund realized that he was truly in love with Maria and wanted to marry her. Edmund proposed to Maria a few times, and she wouldn't accept. It was only after Edmund stood by Maria while she fought a bout of food poisoning that she realized that Edmund was over his past and had fallen in love with her.

After they were married, Maria and Edmund contemplated having children. Del Henry, an ex-boyfriend of Maria's showed up in town and reminded her of their baby she miscarried. Maria soon realized that she had fertility problems and learned improper treatment after her miscarriage was the cause.

Edmund had begun running for Congress. His campaign, combined with her fertility problems and Del's constant presence put distance between the couple. On Election Day, a picture of a close moment between Maria and Del (he kissed her and they decided to just be friends) appeared on the front page of the paper. Edmund blamed losing the election on Maria and what he thought was her affair.

After months of separation, Maria and Edmund reconciled and tried counseling to work out their problems. Edmund began investigating his campaign opponent's connection to the mob, which almost got him killed. Believing him dead, Maria prepared to bury Edmund, only to have him show up alive, on the day of his own funeral! Maria was ecstatic and the reunited couple renewed their wedding vows.

Having briefly contemplated adoption, Maria and Edmund began in-vitro fertilization. Unfortunately it never worked. Maria and then sister-in-law Erica Kane began to clash while living together. During Maria and Edmund's failed attempts at getting pregnant, Edmund often wrote about the couple's experiences in various articles. Maria found out (at first thinking Erica leaked the story to the press) and was mortified that her husband was revealing their most intimate secrets to the world. Despite many arguments, Edmund and Maria patched things up once again.

Maria's younger sister, Anita, convinced teenager Kelsey Jefferson to consider letting Maria and Edmund adopt her child. Maria befriended Kelsey and they agreed on the adoption. During a hit-and-run accident, Kelsey almost lost the baby, but Maria saved their lives. Kelsey quickly became jealous of Maria's life after she developed an obsession with Edmund. Kelsey wanted to leave Maria and be with her. Maria was aware of Kelsey's dependence on Edmund and urged him to set Kelsey straight, which he did. Kelsey gave birth to a baby boy named Sam and gave him to the Greys.

Maria was elated with her beautiful baby. After some time, yet still within the legal period, Kelsey decided that she wanted her child back and gained a court order to do so. Maria was hysterical, having become attached to a child she felt was rightfully hers, and decided to run away with Sam. Edmund, knowing the legal implications of Maria's actions, took Sam from her in the airport. Maria felt alone, heartbroken, betrayed and angry. That very same night, her brother-in-law Dimitri (devastated over a seeming betrayal by Erica) consoled Maria. The two's mutual grief led to lovemaking.

Maria was furious with Edmund for taking Sam away from her. Maria's sister Julia locked Maria and Edmund in a wine cellar so that they could hash things out. Eventually, they did (guilt on Maria's part as a great motivator), and began to move forward with their lives. Kelsey soon realized that she couldn't raise a baby, and decided to give Sam back to his two parents. The Greys were thrilled to have Sam back. However, Maria soon found out that she was pregnant. Edmund was overjoyed, while Maria was convinced she was carrying Dimitri's baby.

Maria made it clear to Dimitri that he was to not be a part of his baby's life. The child would be born under the pretense that it was Edmund's. Dimitri was upset, but understood the position in which they had put themselves. With the pressure mounting, Maria told Edmund that she slept with Dimitri. Edmund realized that the baby was not his and left Wildwind and Maria. Fearing that the baby would have a blood disease that Dimitri carried, Maria ordered blood tests and learned from false test results (they had been switched by Skye Chandler, determined to get Edmund for herself) that Dimitri was indeed the father. After some time, Edmund demanded that he would act as father to the child that should have been his. Dimitri reluctantly agreed, and Edmund moved back into Wildwind and reconciled with Maria.

Erica trapped a pregnant Maria in a cabin and forced her to confess to her affair with Dimitri. Maria went into labor, and with a horrendous ice storm, the two women found themselves trapped. Erica was forced to deliver Maria's baby. Erica successfully saw Maria through her labor, but needed to bring the premature baby to the hospital. Erica took the baby and realized on the way to the hospital that she never told Maria the sex of the baby. The doctors had previously informed Maria that she would be having a boy, but the newborn was actually a girl. On the way to the hospital, Erica's car hit an embankment and the baby was presumed to have drowned in the lake.

For a while, Maria refused to give up hope that the baby was alive, because he was never found. Edmund and Maria eventually accepted the death of their child and grieved. Maria blamed Erica for killing her child, and then herself for having committed adultery. After months of a complicated ruse, Edmund, Maria and other denizens of Pine Valley pieced together that Erica stole Maria's baby girl after getting into the car accident. Edmund and Maria finally got their daughter back and named her Madeline.

During Erica's trial for kidnapping, Edmund, Maria, Brooke and baby Maddie left for New York on a Tempo business trip. Edmund and Maria were looking forward to a happy future with their children. On the way back, Maria and Brooke switched seats on the plane. The plane took a nosedive and Maria handed Maddie to Brooke, who was able to escape with the baby. Maria was unable to escape the plane before it fell over the cliff. Maria's body was never found and she was presumed dead.

Maria did not die in the plane crash. She was rescued by David Hayward, who used an experimental drug on her. The drug saved Maria's life, but gave her amnesia. David, not wanting to be exposed for using an untested drug, told Maria that her name was Maureen Gorman and that she had killed someone in Pine Valley. David sent her to Nevada "for her own protection" and kept in contact with her through the years.

Maria met Zach Slater and the two fell in love. They only spent a few months together before David, ever fearful that Maria would be discovered, called and lied to Maria that the cops were closing in on her. Maria was forced to leave Zach, expecting never to see him again.

Maria settled in Reno and got a job at a hospital. Back in Pine Valley, Hayley and Mateo Santos's child needed a liver transplant and they learned of a possible match at the same hospital where Maria worked. Brooke (who was now engaged to Edmund) began suspecting that this possible match was Maria and traveled to Nevada to see for herself. Brooke was shocked when she visited the hospital looking for Maureen Gorman and came face to face with Maria. Maria, not knowing Brooke, immediately called David and explained that people from Pine Valley recognized her. David, not wanting to be exposed for using an illegal drug, tried to get Maria out of town, but she was determined to learn about her past. Maria traveled to Pine Valley hoping to get answers. David tried desperately to get Maria to leave Pine Valley. On the night of Brooke's wedding to Edmund, Brooke revealed the truth that she had been hiding. Edmund was thrilled to learn his wife was alive, except Maria didn't remember Edmund or her children.

Maria was floored with the news of her family, and felt horrible that as a mother, she couldn't remember her own children. After months of trying to live her old life, Maria declared she was Maureen Gorman and may never be able to live as Maria again. During this time, she relied heavily on new friend, Aidan Devane, who had no past with Maria and only saw her as Maureen.

Maria helped save Aidan's life when he showed up at her doorstep at the Pine Cone Motel with a gunshot wound. She hid Aidan at Wildwind and helped him recover. Once Edmund found out, he became agitated and asked for David's help in drugging Maria to get her memory back. David's drug didn't work, and instead, Edmund's actions pushed Maria away for good. Maria, who had developed feelings for Aidan, went on the run with him while he was escaping an old foe.

On the lam in the Bahamas, Maria and Aidan consummated their relationship. Maria was kidnapped and strapped to a bomb by the people who were after Aidan, but Aidan rescued her. In the end, Aidan killed his enemy and saved Maria. Maria, with Aidan, returned to Pine Valley and signed her divorce papers with Edmund. Maria's mother, Isabella, was furious with Maria for leaving her children and running off with Aidan. Although Maria still could not remember her children, she befriended Sam and Maddie and became attached to them.

Determined to move on with her new life, Maria began taking pre-med classes so she could once again become a doctor. Maria also began to remember little pieces of her old life. These memory flashes compromised her relationship to Aidan, who feared that Maureen would one day remember her past and leave him. Maria tried to convince Aidan that her love for him would never just disappear, but he knew better.

When Maddie witnessed a shooting, Maria and Aidan had to protect her from the killer. While hiding out on a yacht, Maria's maternal instincts kicked in and she did everything in her power to save her daughter. When Maddie was thrown off the yacht and almost drowned, Maria dove in and pulled her to safety. The traumatic event triggered Maria's memory and she recalled all of her past. After dealing with the killer, Aidan realized that Maria had regained her memory and he let her go.

Maria went to Edmund and explained everything to him. Edmund was overjoyed that the love of his life was back, and the two consummated their relationship. Edmund and Maria had a small ceremony where they remarried. Maria took her re-certification exam to regain her status as a neurologist and passed.

When Carlos Reyes was admitted to the hospital following an attack by the Calatravas (the Argentinean gang who were trying to kill Carlos and his brother Pablo), Maria was his consulting doctor. She and Edmund became close friends with Carlos and Pablo. When Carlos died, Maria blamed herself for his death, fearing that the recent renewal of her medical license led to her making a mistake. She was prepared to resign. Soon the truth was revealed: A corrupt nurse employed by the Calatravas had killed Carlos.

Edmund was shot and left paralyzed after helping Pablo deal with the Calatravas. Edmund wanted to undergo risky surgery that could restore the use of his legs, but possibly kill him. Fearful of losing her husband, Maria was adamantly against surgery. Edmund went through with the procedure and Maria did her best to support him. The surgery was not successful, and it appeared Edmund would be paralyzed for life.

Edmund's struggle to deal with his new condition caused strains for the Greys, as he became cold and distant. Complicating matters was the arrival of Zach Slater in Pine Valley. Maria found herself drawn to Zach, her attraction to him very much alive. Zach made it clear to Maria that he wanted to resume their relationship, but Maria vowed to be true to her husband. After Edmund overheard her talking with Zach, Maria came clean that they were involved while she was an amnesiac. Maria swore that her contact with Zach was going to end.

As the distance between Edmund and Maria grew, Maria found herself drawn into Zach's world when she learned that he was really Alexander Cambias Junior, the presumed dead brother of Pine Valley rapist Michael Cambias. Zach had come to town to get the real story behind Michael's death, refusing to believe that the caring boy he once knew had become a monster. Sensing Zach's pain, Maria promised to help Zach come to terms with the truth about Michael, but kept this from Edmund. Zach asked Maria to keep his identity a secret, which Maria agreed to, yet another secret from Edmund.

Erica told Edmund that she had witnessed Maria and Zach in a close moment. Furious with Maria for her continued association with Zach, and with months of distance between them, Edmund initiated divorce proceedings. Maria told Edmund she loved him and would fight the divorce. The tension between them grew when Maria learned that Edmund had begun to get some feelings back in his legs, which he kept from her. Despite some real and unresolved feelings for Zach, Maria was determined to repair her marriage to Edmund. Edmund told Maria he loved her and that he stopped the divorce.

Unbeknownst to Maria, Edmund had recovered from his paralysis and was determined to destroy Zach, and then divorce Maria. Soon after, Edmund was murdered. Ethan Ramsey, Zach's estranged son, told the police he witnessed Zach commit the crime. Zach told Maria that Edmund had been lying to her and could walk. Devastated over Edmund's death, Maria refused to believe Zach and blamed him for Edmund's murder. Zach was arrested and shocked Maria and Ethan when he confessed to the crime. Maria held firm to her belief that Edmund loved her and Zach was guilty. Brooke revealed to Maria that Edmund had planned on divorcing her shortly before he died. Maria refused to believe Brooke, and received another blow when Zach was released from prison, now claiming that he did not kill Edmund.
