ABC.com actor bio:

Emmy Award-winning actress Julia Barr joined the cast of All My Children in 1976 as impetuous teenager Brooke English, the spoiled, rich niece of Phoebe Tyler. Over the years, Brooke has survived her share of trials and tribulations, emerging as a true — and beloved — soap opera heroine.

Julia grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she caught the acting bug at age 13 and became a true star in her hometown. She was acting, singing and dancing in virtually every local production between the Fort Wayne Community Theater, Civic Theater, Wagon Wheel Playhouse and Enchanted Hills Playhouse.

Ms. Barr attended Purdue University, where she starred in such productions as Our Town, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Lover, The Killing of Sister George and Endgame. Then she shuffled off to Buffalo's Studio Arena Theatre, where she earned her Equity card starring in Scapino, and A Girl in My Soup with Van Johnson. Julia then moved to New York, and the work never stopped.

In June 1976, she landed the role that audiences fell in love with: All My Children's Brooke English, and has played it ever since (except for a 15-month break when she toured with Katharine Hepburn and Dorothy Loudon in the national touring company of West Side Waltz). Her portrayal has garnered Julia eight Emmy Award nominations (1980, 1981, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1998 and 2001), and she won the trophy in 1990 and 1998 for Outstanding Supporting Actress. In 1990, she also took home a Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Among her other television credits are Gathering of One, The Adams Chronicles, and a brief role on Ryan's Hope just prior to All My Children. Her film credits include I, the Jury and her off-Broadway credits include Kerouac.

Julia is committed to balancing her passion for acting with her passion for family. When she's not at work, she's just "mom," spending as much time with her daughter as possible. She and her husband enjoy decorating their modern New Jersey home and traveling. Julia's household also includes a feisty dog named Nell (a greyhound and German shepherd mix adopted in October 1996); two independent cats (Dinah and Goldie); a "neurotic" parakeet, and a rabbit named Louis.

The actress is the spokesperson for The Fund for Animals, a cause very near to her heart. The fund works nationwide on advocacy, education, protection and rights of wild and domestic animals. Through her website juliarusebarr.com, Barr educates All My Children fans and animal lovers on the protection and care of animal companions.

In addition, she spent two years as an active volunteer for The Coalition for the Homeless' First Step program, an innovative job-readiness program for homeless women which helps them build new lives by preparing them to enter the work force. In 1996, they honored Julia at the program's annual gala with their "Women Mean Business" award.

The multi-talented Ms. Barr also studies voice, and in September 1996 made a splash singing the National Anthem to a full house at Yankee Stadium for the Baltimore series. In addition, Julia is committed to staying in shape and, with the help of a fitness trainer and strict exercise program, she's never felt better. That, along with her simple beauty regimen, keeps Julia (and Brooke) looking and feeling young, fit and healthy.

ABC.com character bio:

Brooke English arrived on her Aunt Phoebe Tyler's doorstep in 1976 as an unlucky-in-love and rebellious young woman. Brooke moved into the Tyler mansion and began seeing handsome Dan Kennicott, as well as her old boyfriend, ruffian Benny Sago. A wild teenager, Brooke was almost shipped home by Phoebe when Benny blackmailed Phoebe into letting Brooke stay in Pine Valley.

Brooke's interest soon strayed from these two to handsome Tom Cudahay. Unfortunately, Erica Kane was interested in Tom as well and the two's longstanding rivalry was born. Erica was the victor this time around and managed to get Tom to marry her.

Brooke took up with Dan again, becoming the "other woman" in his relationship with Devon Shepard. Phoebe, who was faking paralysis, caught Dan and Brooke in a compromising position. A disgusted Phoebe once again threatened to kick Brooke out, but Brooke discovered Phoebe's paralysis lie and blackmailed her Aunt into allowing her to stay.

Dan eventually broke off with Devon and committed to Brooke. However, Brooke soon started sleeping with Erica's half-brother, Mark Dalton. Dan discovered the affair and left town, while Mark made it clear to Brooke that their relationship was only about sex. Depressed, Brooke began an affair with con artist Eddie Dorrance. After Eddie's death, Brooke learned she was carrying his baby and chose to terminate the pregnancy.

Brooke once again took up with Tom, now separated from Erica. However, Erica soon returned from an unsuccessful attempt at an acting career and convinced Tom to give their marriage another try. When Erica's constant lies prompted Tom to divorce Erica, he got engaged to Brooke. The two wed soon after.

Brooke began a job as a reporter, and made the discovery that her mother, Peg English, was actually code-named Cobra, the leader of an international drug cartel. Soon discovering she was pregnant, Brooke left Tom after discovering that he and Erica had gotten drunk and slept together the night before Erica married Adam. Tom tried to prove Brooke was an unfit mother before she even had the baby, but failed. Meanwhile, Brooke and Mark grew closer, and Mark was with her the night her daughter Laura was born. That same day, Brooke and Tom's divorce was finalized.

Now a TV anchorwoman, Brooke was sent to prison for not revealing a source in a municipal scandal she exposed. After getting out of prison, Brooke and her fiancé, Mark, went to a party where a henchman of the corrupt judge tried to shoot them. Erica's then fiancé, Mike Roy took the bullet instead. Brooke and Mark eventually became estranged because she was too busy tending to her career and daughter, Laura. Mark's drug use didn't help things, and he soon left town. Brooke began a brief affair with daring stuntman Giles St. Clair.

Brooke and Tom found their way back to each other. External problems always wormed their way into Brooke and Tom's relationship, causing strains. The two decided to just be friends. Around this time Brooke discovered that her biological mother was a homeless woman named Jane Dobrin.

Brooke met wealthy Adam Chandler, who quickly fell in love with her. Equally in love, Brooke married Adam. Their happiness was marred when Brooke's daughter Laura was killed by a drunk driver. Brooke still mourns for her daughter to this day.

Hit with the news that Brooke would never be able to have a child, Adam began an affair with young Dixie Cooney. Desperate for an heir, Adam was delighted when Dixie announced she was pregnant, but the affair cost Adam his marriage. Brooke began working with and developing a friendship with Tad Martin, who had fallen in love with Dixie and married her. Brooke was attracted to Tad, and slept with him after he divorced Dixie. After Tad's apparent death, Brooke discovered she was pregnant!

Brooke began a relationship with Jack Montgomery, which led her to clash with longtime rival Erica. Brooke almost lost her unborn child when she and Jack were hit by drunk driver Arlene Vaughan, but thankfully James "Jamie" Martin was born. Eventually Jack and Brooke parted ways as friends.

Brooke took up with her fellow TEMPO magazine employee Edmund Grey. The two began a torrid affair. Unfortunately, Edmund's obsession with discovering his parentage and birthright strained their relationship. Brooke, feeling shut out of his life, wanted Edmund to rely on her, insisting she not just be his "night light, because people don't need them during the day." Edmund's hot/cold routine, as well as his kidnapping of Erica Kane to get back at half-brother Dimitri, left Brooke angry. Things between Brooke and Edmund really ended when Tad returned to town and learned that he was a dad by Brooke. Desperately wanting to be a good father, Tad married Brooke.

However, Dixie also began a secret affair with Tad. Tad began lying to Brooke about his whereabouts, so that he could be with Dixie. Despite Brooke's marriage to another man, Edmund still declared his love for her. Edmund told Brooke about Dixie and Tad's affair, but Brooke chose to stay with Tad. Early in 1994, Brooke became pregnant by Tad. Soon after, Brooke was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy. Realizing that Tad truly loved Dixie, Brooke ended their marriage and lost her unborn child.

A homeless teen, Laura Kirk, came into Brooke's life during the annual Woman of The Year ceremony and publicly charged Brooke with doing nothing to help the cause of the homeless. Brooke was deeply touched by Laura's fervor and promised to work harder for the cause while developing a bond with the teenage girl. Brooke and Adam began seeing each other again, but Adam's feelings were more intense than hers. After being scarred from their previous marriage, Brooke was more guarded and knew Adam would eventually revert back to his old ways. When he and Liza cooked up a marriage scheme to lure Brooke and Tad back to them, Brooke realized that she wasn't invested enough in Adam to put up with everything he had to offer.

Meanwhile, ex-con Janet Green was secretly living at a campsite in the woods with Laura and handsome Pierce Riley. Janet started to develop feelings for Pierce, who formed a friendship with Brooke (Phoebe owned the cabin Pierce lived in). Pierce and Brooke eventually started dating. Realizing that she had lost Pierce, Janet plotted to steal Brooke's identity. Janet's scheme never went very far, but Brooke's life was endangered a few times. Brooke took in Laura and formally adopted her. This incarnation of her relationship with Pierce was short lived, and he soon left town.

Pierce later returned to Pine Valley, and resumed his relationship with Brooke. However, Pierce was troubled by disturbing flashbacks involving gunshots and a woman from his past. When Pierce painfully told Brooke that he may have shot Christina, the woman in his flashbacks, she urged him to get help. She lent her support as he sought treatment. Under hypnosis, he remembered that he and Christina had a daughter in Central America - and he feared that he may have killed her too! In a grueling therapy session, Pierce remembered a soldier forcing him to choose to kill either Christina or Amelia, their daughter. He recalled the soldier shooting Christina by pulling the trigger of the gun in Pierce's hand. Pierce broke down in Brooke's arms and she promised to help him locate his missing daughter. Then, out of the blue, Christina showed up - alive! Pierce returned with her to Central America to find their teenage daughter, Amelia.

Returning from a business trip to New York City, Brooke was traveling with Edmund, Maria and their daughter, Maddie, when the plane crashed. Brooke desperately tried to save Maria Grey's life, but Maria chose to have Maddie saved instead. Maria then fell over the cliff, but her body was never recovered. Brooke and Mateo Santos pressured the NTSB and the airline for answers about the plane crash and vowed to find out the truth. Jim Thomasen, another passenger on the plane, helped Brooke through their ordeal of the plane crash, and the two began seeing each other.

Laura was shocked that her mother was dating Jim. Years earlier, a desperate Laura had posed for lewd photos and Jim had been the photographer. Laura told Jim that she only posed for the pictures because she needed the money for her sick mother. With Jim now in Pine Valley, Laura soon discovered that her pictures were on the internet. Laura was soon kidnapped by Ricky, the man she had posed with in the pictures. An anonymous caller tipped Brooke off and she found Laura's nude internet pictures. Brooke received a ransom note demanding that the police not be notified. Brooke decided not to call the police and told Jim that she would get the money and make the drop herself. Jim saved Brooke from Ricky and chased after him. Jim played the hero and brought Laura home to Brooke. Laura told Brooke that she knew Ricky from the photo shoot and why she posed for the pictures, while keeping the secret that Jim was the photographer. Alone, Laura and Jim declared a truce as they decided to keep their secret to themselves.

Adam, who owned the airline of the plane that crashed, learned of an explosion on Brooke and Edmund's flight and reported this new evidence. Brooke was able to see the luggage fragment that contained the explosive, while Jim was anxious that Brooke would realize that the luggage fragment looked familiar (specifically that it was his). Adam offered Tempo management to Brooke, who would only accept the offer if she could share it with Edmund and Jim. Alone, Edmund suggested that Brooke find out more about Jim before co-owning Tempo with him.

Soon Brooke found evidence linking Jim to the explosion on Flight 149, and also finally discovered that Jim was the child pornographer responsible for taking the lewd photos of Laura. Brooke confronted Jim at Stuart's art gallery and ended up shooting and killing him when he threatened to go after Jamie.

Faced with a murder trial she might not win, Brooke went on the run with Jamie, but Tad was able to convince her to return to Pine Valley. Brooke went on trial for murder and her future looked bleak. With some secret maneuvering from Tad, however, Brooke's lawyers got Brooke acquitted. Around this time, Laura left town to study in China. Also throughout the trial, Dimitri Marick, Edmund's older brother and Erica's two time ex-husband, became interested in saving Brooke. He developed a genuine interest in her, but ultimately, Brooke put the brakes on their relationship before it ever really began.

Brooke became involved at the community center and began a relationship with Reverend Eliot Freeman. The two shared a genuine love for helping children and the underprivileged. When Laura returned, Brooke was ecstatic. She had a wonderful man in her life and her children were home. Unfortunately, Eliot had a secret that could threaten a future with Brooke- he was the drunk driver who had killed her other daughter Laura. The guilt was too much for Eliot to take and he confided in Brooke his horrible misdeeds. Brooke was never able to bring herself to continue loving the man who caused the worst pain in her life. When Eliot said goodbye to Brooke, she told him that she knew he was truly remorseful for his actions and forgave him to the extent that she could.

Laura fell fatally ill with heart disease. On her believed deathbed, Laura's friend Leo agreed to marry her. However, at the last minute, Ryan Lavery donated the heart of his recently deceased wife Gillian to Laura. Brooke was relieved her daughter's life had been saved. She stood by Laura in her turbulent marriage to Leo, but when the marriage dissolved Laura left town.

After some time, Brooke and Edmund rekindled their old flame. These two best friends and co-workers cautiously fell back in to the relationship that they never finished years earlier. Brooke was happier than she had ever been with Edmund. The two were engaged to be married and things couldn't seem brighter. However, Brooke began to suspect that Maria Santos Grey, Edmund's presumed dead wife, was actually alive. Tad and Brooke investigated her suspicions and discovered that a Maureen Gorman in Nevada was actually Maria. Tad convinced Brooke not to play by the book this time and just ignore it - be happy with Edmund. Brooke tried, but on the night of her wedding, she revealed to Edmund that his true love was alive and well. Edmund was furious that Brooke kept Maria from him. Edmund and Brooke had their marriage annulled.

Brooke entered into an affair with Adam Chandler yet again, but once Tad and Jamie found out, she ended it. Brooke found out that Jamie had spent the night with Babe, JR Chandler's new wife, and worried about the fallout. When Babe announced she was pregnant, Jamie claimed that the baby was his! Brooke has tried to remain supportive with her son while counseling him on the wisest way to handle the Babe situation.
