IMAGinE OCR - ICR
The terms OCR (optical character recognition) and ICR (intelligent character recognition) are often used interchangeably. There are no absolute definitions for these two terms. In other words, some people use ICR when others mean OCR, and visa versa. IMAGinE uses OCR to refer to the ability to recognize typeset characters (i.e., text that is typed or typeset), and ICR to refer to hand print characters (i.e., generally block print). The diagram below illustrates the difference between OCR text that is typeset and ICR text that is hand printed.
