My father, Lewis R. Aiken, Jr., was a professor and liked working for different colleges and universities. When I was 13, we moved to Armidale, Australia, and he worked for the University of New South Wales. Another time, when I was 16, we moved to Tehran, Iran, and my father, through UCLA, educated the Iranian teachers on new methods of teaching and educational testing. So we traveled both nationally and internationally.
We finally ended up in California, and I went to college at the University of Californa San Diego and earned a B.S. in Computer Engineering. I enjoyed school, so after a year working for IBM in Rochester, MN (imagine how cold that was after leaving UCSD), I went to graduate school in computer science at UCLA, and earned an M.S. there.
Currently, I live in San Jose with my wife Michele (who I met at UCSD) and two great kids - Sam, who is 12 and Max, who is 8. They both love sports and are very talented in mathematics.
I have one brother, Chris, who is 10 1/2 months older than me. He is a professor of Microbiology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
