Mario Kart 64 Tips & Strategies

The best way to turn in Mario Kart 64 is to use the power-slide method. This is done by jumping (L and R Buttons) and turning at the same time. You hold down the jump buttons as you slide around the turn. This technique, once mastered, will help you to keep your speed up.

This is a very useful, but confusing tip. Using the technique I described above you must follow the following directions exactly. While holding L and R in turning a corner (turning right for instance) you have to more the control stick quickly left (if turning right) then quickly back to the right. The smoke coming out of your car should turn a yellowish color. If you repeat that same thing again before you are out of the turn, and while still holding down one of the jump buttons, the smoke out of your car should turn red. This is where you let go of the jump button. Your guy should make one of his comments, and then fly a little ahead. This is the miniboost. If you are turning left though, switch the directions around (ex. if turning left, quickly move control stick right and back left twice). Pretty tricky, but once you get it, great to beat people with. The speed burst is not quite as big as the big boost you can get at the beginning of each race (Next Tip is Big Boost at beginning of Race).

This is also a very good trick. At the beginning of each race after the second light starts to fade, start holding the acceleration button (A Button). This should give you a huge start equivalent to using a mushroom!!!

You can drag certain items behind you. These items are the singel banana peel, spiked shell, single red shell, single green shell, and fake question box. To drag them, just hold down the Z button (button on back of controller). This allows you to get other items. Just remember, when you let go of the Z button, the item will shoot off!! Also, with the Multiple Banana peels, triple red shells, and triple green shells, press the Z button once as soon as you get them. This will make the shells spin around you, and the peels drag behind you. You don't have to hold down the Z button for those items either. Just press the Z button once more to shoot off or drop the items one at a time.

Here is a technique to pass an opponent right in front of you. Get directly behind them and stay there for a while and you will get what is called a drag. It's a mini speed boost that will allow you to pass him or her.

No slip banana trick. Sometimes, when you hit a banana, you won't wipe out right away. You'll just wobble back and forth. During that time if you just tap the brake button (B button) a little musical note will appear above your head and you won't spin out. This is a great way to save yourself in a close race.

When you get the gold in all four cups (Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special) in all 3 classes (50cc, 100cc, and 150cc) you get the extra class. In this class all the courses are mirror images of themselves (Left turns into Right). Pretty Challenging, but ending is same. Toad's Turnpike is sweet reversed. Cars come at You!!!!!
