Carmen: band members

I have scanned some pictures of Carmen. They are from the only Carmen CD I have been able to obtain, from Line Records in Germany. I also have the LP, and the covers and packaging are different. Why do they do that? Anyway, these are from the CD; I'd scan the LP as well but it's in terrible shape, being older than myself (I'm rather young). Also, these pictures are much bigger than I expected! Click here for the front cover. The LP cover shows a rose against a similar spacey background. This is their first album, Fandangos in Space, and as the name implies, it is not your ordinary spanish music. I like to refer to it as "progressive flamenco," for lack of a better label. It draws on different styles and techniques and blends them very effectively. I did not know what to expect when first I put the album on my turntable, but I was very impressed, and an instant fan.

This slightly crooked pic here is the back of the CD booklet. It shows the members of the band as well as what they play.

You may have noticed that both Angela and Roberto are credited with "footwork". Aside from their vocal and instrumental roles in the group, they were the dancers! There are various dance segments throughout Carmen's music that showcased their dancing talents in live shows. I have never seen them live but have heard from people who have that they were quite impressive. Click here for a picture of the dancers in action. This picture is from the centerfold of both the LP and the CD (finally, some consistency!).

Now I don't know a lot about the specific members of this band. Most of the information I have can be found in the interview.

The one I know the most about is John Glascock. He is one of the best bass-players ever, and after Carmen split up he became the bass-player for Jethro Tull, another of my favorite bands. Apparently Carmen had been opening for Tull around the time of "A Passion Play" and "WarChild" (Tull albums), around '73-'74. Glascock was with Tull for only 3 albums and part of a 4th (plus 1 live double-album), however, before complications from heart surgury caused his death at an early age. I am very much a John Glascock fan.

Angela Allen sang backup on a couple of songs on Tull's '76 album, "Too Old To Rock'n'Roll; Too Young To Die". David Allen and, I believe, John Glascock were beginning to make plans with Tull's drummer Barriemore Barlow to form their own band, just before Glascock's death. That's about all I know about them. My mom told me they once appeared on Midnight Special or some similar show; if anyone has any info on that, please let me know.
