Disclaimer: This site does not condone whipping and flogging and it does not advocate the use of, or the return to corporal punishments as a form of penal retribution. This site DOES NOT depict the whipping of Women or Children nor does it encourage any type of violence or aggression towards women or children. Flogging, Whipping, Scourging, Lashing, Caning; These are all different names to what is perhaps the oldest form of corporal punishment. Over the centuries, whipping has taken various forms: From the ritual of the British Naval Flogging on one hand to the vigilante Horse-whipping of the old American West on the other. Other versions included the public flogging at the colonial whipping post or the carnival-like atmosphere of the medieval goal in the town square.
This site is simply a forum for the depiction of historically accurate scenes of Floggings and Whippings. The first gallery of these scenes were self-drawn and were derived from such literary sources as: "Sea Life In Nelson's Time" by John Masefield; "Red Hannah- Delaware's Whipping Post" by Robert Caldwell; "Flagellation- The Story of Corporal Punishment" by G.R. Scott; Mutiny and Romance in the South Seas by Sven Wahlroos; Rack, Rope, and Red-Hot Pincers by Geoffrey Abbott; and "Under The Lash- A History of Corporal Punishment in the British Armed Forces" by Scott Claver.
The second gallery is a collection of illustrations, engravings, and photographs taken from the above listed sources as well as the following: The London Dungeon Book Of Crime And Punishment by Richard Byrne; Gone For A Soldier by Victor Neuburg; Hell And Paradise- The Norfolk, Bounty, Pitcairn Saga by Peter Clarke; and various historical web sites on the internet.
A Word Of Caution: The scenes contained in these links attempt to realistically depict the violent, brutal event that a flogging or whipping actually was. The victims shown in these drawings, illustrations, and photographs are all able-bodied, mature men.
