Jere's Ars Magica Saga: Venetian Relations

Byzantine and Venice

Tensions developed between the two states due to the renewed presence of Byzantine in Dalmatia after 1167. This lead to the sudden overnight arrest of all Venetians in the Byzantine empire on March 12, 1171. At the same time the Venetians' property was confiscated from their warehouses. This set off a Byzantine-Venetian war that continues for a decade during which the Venetians sack various Greek islands. The war is a factor in turning Venice even more strongly against Byzantium; relations worsen until the Venetians turn the Fourth Crusade against Constantinople itself in 1204 and conquered it, establishing the Latin Empire.
