Prof. James Gordon

James Gordon was a cop from Chicago who had ratted on some crooked policemen. He left Chicago and went to Gotham for a change of venue. There, he found the city was just as crooked if not more so. He stayed away from that, though, concentrating on what crime he could fight safely, as his wife was pregnant. He quickly became known as a hero cop and was sent to track down the Batman when he first appeared. He ended up befriending Batman and has since worked with him on a regular basis, one of the few men who can call Batman friend.  He retired from being Police Comissioner of Gotham shortly after the end of No Man's Land.
