YR-035 MODAT 5 Experimetal Veritech Combat Cycle
RPG Stats and Background by: Rick R. Mortis.
Technical Info from the Robotech Technical Files, by Peter Walker and Pieter Thomassen, with Rob Morgenstern
BACKGROUND
By 2027, engineers had managed to solve the problems that plagued the transforming limbs of the Hargun, and went to developing the first fully-transformable descendant of the Hargun. Rather than developing an improved Hargun, the design team createde a totaly new Veritech mecha design. The new dessign was lighter, and more agile and manouverable than the heavier Hargun. Furthermore, the first five fully-functional prototypes, or the MODAT (Mobile Operations Data Access Terminal) 1 through 5, as they came to be called, were also equipped with a high-speed uplink to the SDF-1's main computer, the E.V.E., which had been transferred to the Robotech Research Center in Tokyo. The MODAT was armed with the woefully inadequate GU-18 25mm gun pod because the GU-19 was far too large to fit into the transformation sequence. Heavier weapons were planned, but never deployed.
Only five MODAT prototypes were ever built. The first four were impounded and were either destroyed or were well hidden by Colonel Andrews weeks before his abortive coup in the Far East. The MODAT 5 was stolen in December 2028 and was destroyed under mysterious circumstances. The political fallout form the debacle, as well as the Second Robotech War effectively killed the program, with no further development of the MODAT-series taking place, and planned production of the mecha cancelled.
To this day, however, rumours persist of sightings of this mecha in Invid occupied Asia, although it is possible that these could be mistaken sightings of Red-painted Harguns, possibly even the modified Space Hargun prototype installed in the modified Pirate Space fighter used during Col. Andrew's attempted coup.
Note: Even though the MODAT 5 was destroyed, these statistics are reproduced for those who want to role-play characters from the movie, or as hypothetical stats for MODATs one through four.
RPG STATS
Vehicle Type: One man Veritech cycle technology demonstrator (prototype).
Crew: One. A passenger may be carried on the back in Motorcycle mode, but must be dropped before the mecha transforms.
M.D.C. BY LOCATION:
Battloid Form
*Head 15
**Hands (2) 5 each
Arms (2) 20 each
Legs/Thrusters (2) 35 each
***Main Body 45
**Rear Thrusters (5) 5 each
**Wheels (2, Rear) 2 each
**GU-18 Gun Pod 20
*Destroying the head of the MODAT 5 will destroy all the mecha’s radar, communications and sensors. The mecha is now -2 to strike, parry and dodge.
**These are small targets, attackers are -3 to hit on a "called shot"
***Destroying the main body will shut down the mecha. Any extra damage over the 45 MD required to destroy the mecha will injure the pilot, applied to any armour first.
Cycle Form
*Wheels (2) 2 each
**Main Body 45
*Rear Thrusters (5) 5 each
*Headlight (1, front) 40 SDC
*These are small targets, attackers are -3 to hit on a "called shot"
**Destroying the main body will shut down the mecha.

WEAPON SYSTEMS
Note: Uless stated otherwise, the MODAT 5's weapons can only be used in Battloid form.
- GU-18 25mm Gun Pod. The MODAT used a small, single-barrelled 25mm gun pod as its primary weapon. The gun pod uses special 25mm ammo developed for the RDF Exculiber destroid, but never issued. The gun pod was very underpowered, but was the only gun pod small enough to be included in the transformation sequence.
- Purpose: Assault/Anti-personell
- Range: 1200m
- Mega-Damage: 2D4 MD per shot
- Rate of Fire: Equal to the total hand-to-hand attacks of the pilot.
- Payload: 12 rounds per clip. The MODAT 5 carries two spare clips in each leg.
- Hand to Hand Combat. Rather than use any weapons, the MODAT 5 can opt to engage in hand to hand combat.
- Punch: 1D6 MD
- Kick: 1D6 MD
- Leap Kick: 2D6 MD
- Body Flip/Throw: 1D4 MD
- Body Block/Tackle: 1D6 MD plus knockdown.
STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE MODAT 5:
- Radar: Range: 30 km. Standard operation.
- Radio/Video Communications: Wide band, directional radio and video telecast capabilities. Range: 1000km, or can be boosted by satellite.
- Laser Targeting System: Close range; 1 km
- Combat Computer: Calculates, stores & monitors data on the control panel computer screen or Heads-up display
- External Audio Pickup: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- Loudspeaker: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- Optics: Infrared: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
- Optics: Nightvision: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
- Optics: Thermal Imager: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a false-colour visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
- EVE Computer Uplink: The MODAT series of cycles were equipped with an uplink to the Robotech Research Centre’s EVE Computer, itself taken from the SDF-1. This allows the character to access information from the computer from any location within the MODAT’s communications range. It also gives the character a +5% bonus to their Computer Operation skill.
- Protoculture Engine: The MODAT 5 runs off Protoculture power cells, in much the same manner as the Cyclone. The MODAT 5 uses four cells, two in the body and one in each leg. Typically, the MODAT 5 will last about 96 operational hours before cell replacement. Constant leaping or flying will not wear out the cells quicker, as the MODAT 5 uses dedicated cells to power it’s thrusters. Normally, the MODAT will alert its pilot when power is running low, however a malfunction in the computer of MODAT 5 meant that this feature was disabled, thus Mark Landry had no warning of the MODAT’s failing power.
HAND TO HAND COMBAT BONUSES FOR MODAT 5 COMBAT TRAINING:
- 2 attacks per melee (plus those of the pilot)
- Add one addtional attack at levels four, eight and twelve
- +1 on initative
- +1 to strike
- +3 to parry
- +4 to dodge, +5 in motorcycle mode
- +3 to rolll with a punch or impact, reducing damage by half
- Critical strike same as pilot's hand to hand.
