Summer Fishing tips for the Northern Beach area of North Carolina's Outerbanks |
On our most recent trip to the OBX, fishing was SLOW! we were there the second week of July ( not peak fishing time ) We caught a few fish, but none worth bragging about. We are planning another trip in October, from what I've heard fishing in the fall is great. |
My favorite spot for fishing in the summer is at " The Little Bridge " this is located just as you're coming out of Nags Head going toward Roanoke Island. Early morning Black Drum seem to always be biting fresh shrimp. Use a bottom rig and throw back under the bridge near the pylons. I saw several people catching trout here as well, but they seem to stop hitting a little after sun rise. There always are plenty of Spots, Croakers, and Sea mullet along with an occasional Flounder. They bite shrimp, squid, bloodworms, or cut bait. This is also a good place to take your kids, you almost always catch something, there are restrooms in the parking lot, and a tackle shop at the Nags Head end of the bridge. |
Kitty Hawk Pier: it's hit and miss in the summer. Spanish off the end of the pier with jiggers, Blues from middle to the end on jiggers, and a wide variety bottom fishing. ( watch out for the bait thieving crabs ) |

Avalon Pier: Located in Kill Devil Hills. Fishing has always been pretty steady here in the summer. Blues on jiggers from about any where on the pier. My son caught 3 nice Blues in 15 minutes on a pink Gotcha using 6 lb line and a light weight spining combo. |

From the surf. Bottom rigs with sand fleas seem to be the ticket in the summer. Flounder, Pompano, Spots, Croakers, and Mullet. I usually use a Sand flea on one hook and a piece of squid on the other. |
