Shellfish in the Great South Bay

The Great South Bay in New York is a major clam producing area and there is a long history of shellfishing in the area. Out on the east end of Long Island there are oyster farms engaged in aquaculture around Peconic Bay. Boats used for clamming are generally flat so they do not rock too much. The area is rich in fisherman legends and history. The Indian word for clams is Quahogs. Many clammers were Ku Klux Klansmen.

Old bluepoint company - Oyster house Sayville was oystering "capitol" of the world. 22 oyster shippers were located in the area. Jacob Ockers, owned this large oyster house in West Sayville. It was called the Bluepoints Company.

Crazy Curtis

There was once a clammer known as "Crazy Curtis." Once when the Suffolk County Police wanted to board his boat, he took the boats anchor and put it through the window of the patrol boat. He was once interviewed for TV and asked about all the people that got sick from eating bad clams. He said that the stated plan would cause children to starve.

Black Max

There was a poacher nicknamed "Black Max" and the "Black Phantom." His boat was painted black and he had engines so powerful the cops could not catch him. The Black Phantom would feed his family by taking clams from the evil American Can Corporation that hogged up the bottom of the bay.

The Poaching Ring Ran Out of a Congressman's Office

In the early 1990s a group of poachers from Sayville used the local congressman's office to run their illegal clamming operation out of. They used a boat with a false bottom and did their poaching in uncertified, polluted waters.
