The Source and Origin of the Legend

Mary's Grave Urban Legend

The Long Island Mary's Grave Urban Legend has been floating around for a while. The film makers pointed listed Sayville first as as the place of the legend.

There is much speculation around the world as to where the location of the grave of the Mary Grave legend is, especially since the makers of the movie claim to know where the location of the grave is. Like all legends, there is always a kernel of truth. The producers of the Mary's Grave movie even listed Sayville first on their website as the Mary Grave town. Colors used in the movie are purple and gold, with lightning bolts, the colors and symbols of Sayville. Evidence points towards Sayville as the source.

The legend of Mary's Grave started in Sayville, Long Island. There were actually two Marys, Maria of the Normandy Inn on Lakeland Ave. just north of town, and a Sayville girl, whose street name was "Mary."

"Mary"  made headlines many years ago after she was killed by her
pimp boyfriend. Her body was found by a fisherman in a swamp. According to the Medical Examiner she was killed horribly. Within about a week from finding her, the fisherman found another girl's body. Of all Long Islanders in history, the killing by her boyfriend was the most horrible. A relative was quoted in Newsday as calling their Sayville neighborhood as the "Sayville Slums."

She went to the Sayville Schools, but she never made it to graduation. She is buried in Sayville, NY. The grave is located way towards the back near the swamp. The old rumours floating around say the way the urban legend regarding her ghost got stated was one Sayville kid dared another kid to take some flowers in a vase from her grave and give it to his mother as a present. They say he did take it, and from then on in kids were visiting the grave and the story grew bigger and bigger. As the years went by stories started circulating that she is haunting Sayville and her soul can never rest because of her brutal murder.

An interesting side story is that her math teacher also made headlines when he was fired. He drew an inappropriate picture on the blackboard and caused an outrage.

Another girl, Maria (Also known as "Mary") was killed right outside Sayville in a place called the Normandy Inn on Lakeland Ave., which runs straight through Sayville. It is common to have séances there.

There has been a "Sayville Novel" story written about the deaths of the Mary's there. The story is called "They are all called Mary." There has also been a movie made called "Mary's Grave" where on the official website the movie maker lists Sayville first as the location of the legend.

What propelled the story to such fame was it had all the ingredients of a good story, which was why Newsday gave it so much coverage. A young girl killed ultra-horribly by her boyfriend in an unsolved murder from a place that has a history of witches and other weirdness. On top of that, the story of the earlier Maria and the haunted Normandy Inn on Lakeland Ave. added even more to the Mary Legend. One Mary is bad enough, but two?

As the years went by the facts circulated into urban legend and many people began to believe Mary was killed along Sweet Hallow Road. But that was only added to make the story more interesting, as Sweet Hallow sounds like "Sleepy Hallow."
