Issac and Rebekah |
When Abraham had become a ripe old age, he told the senior servant to swear by the Lord that he will not procure a wife from among the Canaanites but instead go to his own land and get a wife for him from among his kindred. The servant asked him what if the woman is unwilling to follow? Abraham responded by saying that never take his son back to that land and that if this is occured he will be released from his promise. The servant took ten of his master's camels and bearing all kinds of gifts he made his way to the city of Nahor. Once he made it to the well and prayed to the Lord. He said,"...While I stand here at the spring and the daughters of the townsmen are coming to draw water, if I say to a girl, 'Please lower your jug, that I may drink,' and she answers, ' Take a drink, and let me give water to your camels, too,' let her be the one whom you have decided upon for your servant Isaac. In this way I shall know that you have dealt graciously with my master." When he had finished this Rebekah came out with a jug on her shoulder. The servant asked for a drink and she gave him a drink. Once he was done drinking she gave his camels water too. Once she was done with this he gave hera gold ring and two gold bracelets. She ran to her mother's household. When Laban saw these things he went and got him and set food before him. But before he ate he told them his tale. He gave her brother and mother costly presents. Rebekah went with him after this blessing, |

One da toward the evening Isaac went out in the field, and as he looked around he noticed that camels were approaching. Rebekah, too, was looking around and asked the servant who was approaching them. He responded by saying that is Isaac.Isaac took her into his tent, and married her. |

Birth of Esau and Jacob |
Isaac entreated the Lord on behalf of his wife since she was sterile. The Lord her Isaac and Rebekah became pregnant. The children in her womb jostled so much she consulted the Lord and he answered, |
"Two nations are in your womb, two people are quarrelling while still within you; But one shall surpass the other, and the older shall serve the younger." |

The first to emerge was reddish and his body was hairy, thus they named him Esau. His brother came next gripping his brother's heel; so they named him Jacob. As Esau grew up he became a skillful hunter whereas Jacob was a simple man who kept to his tent. One day when Jacob was cooking stew Esau came in from the open famished. He said to Jacob, give me some of that stew; I am starving. Jacob replied, first give me your birthright. Esau agreed because he was at the point of death. Esau cared little for his birthright. |
