How my Type 2 Deck Surprised me:  An Analysis
By Tim Bachmann
On Friday night, I was expecting to make the top 8, but not win.  I didn't think my deck would do too well, since I only play tested against Affinity and with all of the rogue decks running around, I didn't know what to expect.  Before the tournament I was running two Akroma's Vengeance and one Flooded Strand, four Eternal Dragon and no Temple of the False God.  But as I arrived at the store, I noticed I had one Goblin Piledriver in another deck (which was crap to say the least) for extended.  Well I traded it and got the following:
1 Akroma's Vengeance, 2 Flooded Strand, 3 Temple of the False God
Thanks to the charity of my friends as well.  Anyway, I took out my three cycling land for the temples, an Eternal Dragon for the Vengeance, and stalking stones for the Flooded Strand.  The night started and I prayed.

ROUND 1:  WARREN WITH AFFINITY
And I said the only deck I play tested against was affinity.  I won the first with a fourth turn Wrath, fifth turn Vengeance, thanks to the temples.
Second game, I sideboarded in 3 annuls for 3 discombobulates.  Let me tell you, if they can't get blue mana, they're not going to win.
His first turn, tree of tales, go.  I win.  I played island, had annul in hand.  He plays great furnace, go.  I win.  Anyway, I countered his card draw and blue mana sources, vengeanced, and killed with an angel.
Matches 1-0 Games 2-0
ROUND 2: SOME-KINDA-ROGUE-DECK-A-TYPE
This guy was the cockiest son of a...anyway, he swept me.  First game, he came out with a myr incubator, made twenty tokens.  I had a decree of justice in hand with seven land.  I was at thirteen.  I scooped.
Second game, I made the mistake of sideboarding in two stifles, and a mindslaver and removed three discombobulates.  I should have put in annuls.  Anyway, expecting to stifle his incubator win condition, I kept it in had.  He plays clockwork dragon.  Did I say he used Urza's powerplant, mine and tower along with green mana accel.?  Anyway, he got it up to a 21/18 with trample (loxodon warhammer).  I shook his hand.
Matches 1-1 Games 2-2  Not what I wanted after not making top 8 two weeks ago.
ROUND 3: NICK WITH GRAB THE REINS/WALL OF BLOOD
I swept him.  This deck just isn't good.  He didn't get me below 15 each game, I won with angel.  This deck sucks when you play against life gain.
Matches 2-1 Games 4-2
ROUND 4:  COLE/MATT WITH GOBBO-BIDDING
Cole playing Matt's deck, I thought I was done for after game 1.  He cast bidding on turn six after, of course, wrath of god.  I knew this matchup was in my favor after sideboarding:  In:  4 CoP: Reds, 2 Wing Shards.  I took out some counter stuff.  Each of the next games was playe with a third or fifth turn CoP: Red.  Needless to say, I respect that he didn't scoop, but c'mon, it's just a waste of time
Matches 3-1 Games 6-3  I was fourth going into the finals.

FINALS ROUND 1: CODY WITH G/W CONTROL

Like I said in the Outpost, the only white control variant in type 1 is U/W because of counters.  First game, he beat me down to ten with repetetive Troll Ascetics.  I hard cast a decree of silence.  It sits for four turns without doing anything, long enough for me to find my other one, a win condidtion, and counterspells.  I won after hardcasting another decree of silence and Eternal Dragon.
Game 2.  Cody and I are pretty good friends.  We have light conversation here and there, but he's just like me after losing the first game.  No talking from him in game 2.  Complete determination.  I hardcast decree of silence (by the way, I didn't side anything).  He flipped me off.  I played Dragon, He scooped.
Now I'm going against my worst matchup for top four winners bracket.
FINALS ROUND 2: JOSH WITH R/W SLIDE
Definately the best game I have EVER played.  My hands are shaking writing about this part.  I can't really remember what happened the first game, but I know I won with Akroma's vengeance and a dragon.  Game 2.  I sided in 4 CoP: Reds for lightning rift, two stifle, 1 mindslaver, 3 annuls, and 2 wing shards.  All but three Karmas from the sideboard.  He got me down to one.  I was praying I didn't lose.  Had a CoP: Red on the field and in my hand the entire game.  Angels suck.  He had three rifts and I had more land than God.  He had an angel in play, me at one.  Next turn I was dead unless I topdecked an...AKROMA'S VENGEANCE!  I slammed it down on the table like a crazy lunatic.  All threelightning rifts GONE!  I played the CoP: Red in my hand, and decked him with...INSPIRATION!  ONTO THE WINNERS BRACKET!  (By the way, I have the best luck top-decking).
FINALS FINAL MATCH 1ST AND 2ND: CHRIS WITH AFFINITY
After the game I just played, didn't care how I did anymore.  I played the game of my life.  But then he played artifacts and more artifacts and I knew I had it in the bag.  Chris and I have been playing together since I started, we started at the same time.  We're good friends.  I lost game one only because I couldn't get a second white mana source, the only time i got mana screwed the entire night.  I sided in my annuls, and won the next two games.  I won!

So, this leads me to wonder, am I that good of a player, that I can throw a deck together the night before and win?  Or did I just get lucky?  I'm no gloating, at least I don't mean to, but regionals, bring it!
