Mirrodon Draft: The Cards to Pick by Tim Bachmann |
||||||
On Friday evening before the type-2 tournament, I decided to improve my drafting skills by asking three other people, Matt, Dave, and Anthony, if they wanted to booster draft Mirrodon. Of course, Matt said yes without ponderign the question. But anyway, we opened our first packs an I remembered I was a control player. Thinking like one, and reading several asorted interesting articles about Mirrodon draft and what cards are lethal, I knew exactly what I was going to draft. My first pack contained a Triskelion. I thought to myself, it's not a great rare, but spot removal could help a lot. We passed. Somewhere in the midst of the "Hahaha, sutpid Tim pulled an Oblivion Stone and Platinum Angel" remarks from the jealous peanut gallery, I noticed two cards that I had to pick up because of the great cards they were in a draft. Those two cards were a *Shiny* Loxodon warhammer and a *Shiny* Slith Firewalker. Of course I'm going to keep some of the best cards in the card pool. After of all the confusion, I pulled the following: 1 Oblivion Stone 2 Hematite Golem 1 Platinum Angel 1 Goblin Dirigible 1 Triskelion 1 Neurok Hoversail 1 Quicksilver Elemental 1 Loxodon Warhammer 2 Blinding Beam 1 Yotian Soldier 1 Taj-Nar Swordsmith 1 AEther Spellbomb 1 Wail of the Nim 1 Bonesplitter 1 Terror 1 Rustpore Ram 3 Neurok Spy 1 Clockwork Condor 2 Inertia Bubble 3 Krark-Clan Grunt 2 Regress 1 Rustmouth Ogre 1 Looming Hoverguard 2 Seething Song 1 Neurok Familiar 1 Ogre Leadfoot 1 Override 1 Slith Firewalker 1Wanderguard Sentry 1 Molten Rain 1 Somber Hoverguard 1 Shatter 1 Disarm 1 Grab the Reins 1 Domineer Needless to say, I drafted Blue/Red. I started my deck base with the heart that would win most of my games: Neurok Spy and equipment. In a set that is 70% Artifacts, what are the cahnces that my opponent plays NONE? And with a warhammer? He's a nasty five damage, five lifegain per turn. Inertia Bubbles were nice, considering I only drafted one shatter, I might as well make my Spy unblockable and their artifact useless. I also added 2 Regress to the deck because it felt like it needed more control. I also chose looming Hoverguard. I don't know why, but I did. He never met the table. For red, yeah. I put in 2 Seething songs for acceleration, grab the reins for an earlier win condition, 1 shatter because, hey, it's Mirrodin, Slith Firewalker, because he can get nasty when you clear the board with your oblivion stone, Molten rain to slow them down, Ogre leadfoot because I don't like nasty artifact creatures and he's a beatstick, and Rustmouth ogre because for one more mana thatn the 3/3 beatstick, he's a 5/4 that destroys an artifact when he gets through. As for artifacts, I needn't say it, but I will. I put in the Angel, Stone, Warhammer, Bonespllitter, Hoversail, AEther spellbomb, and Yotian Soldier, along of course with triskelion. The final product looked a little like: 3 Neurok Spy 2 Inertia bubble 2 Regress 1 Looming Hoverguard 2 Seething Song 1 Shatter 1 Rustmouth Ogre 1 Leadfoot Ogre 1 Grab the Reins 1 Molten Rain 1 Slith Firewalker 1 Platinum Angel 1 Oblivion Stone 1 Loxodon Warhammer 1 Bonesplitter 1 Neurok Hoversail 1 AEther Spellbomb 1 Yotian Soldier 1 Triskelion 7 Mountain 7 Island Hey, I won. And every game I played went a lot faster than Matt's games. I hope you guys don't take my strategy next time knowing this info, but I guess that is my curse. I am such a good player (Wink, Wink) that I must share my success with the world. I guess that lifegain and taking advantage of the environment make drafting much easier. Anyway, see you at the draft on Sunday! |
