Deck Therapy: Anurid Brishhopper in Extended
by Tim Bachmann
       Because I'm getting so bored with school and the local type 2 "metagame" if you wish to call it that, I am starting a series of articles that will build decktypes that are not used too much in metagames, but still may haev promise.  Note that some of these decks are not play-tested, so don't espect excellent results for each posted deck.  I know, however, that this deck has potential.  Let's look at the decks epicenter and the focus of the deck:

The deck is an aggro-control deck.  What does that mean?  Well that means its like the Rock.  It takes board control while building an offensive army of creatures to tear up your opponent.  The core of the deck is one of my favorite creatures of all time, the Anurid Brushhopper.  This card is amazing.  not only undercosted as a 3/4 for 1WG, but the ability to escape God's Wrath at the cost of two cards from your hand.  There are two versions to the deck that I am going to post.  One uses the Brushhopper as a Madness outlet, but that deck looks too much like U/G/w madness from back in the day.  Anyway, a card by card analysis:

Anurid Brushhopper: The aforementioned creature, the core of the deck, the spiritmonger.

Ravenous Baloth: This card is given.  You're playing green and the brushhopper is a beast, literally and metaphorically, so when you have no cards in hand, sac it to the baloth.

Birds of Paradise: Moron, you're playing green!

Mirari's Wake: Pumps your creatures and gives you the extra mana you need for one of the cards listed below.

Wrath and Rout: HAHA!  That's a great subtitle!  Anyway, Wrath for board control, remove the hopper until EoT and you got creature advantage.  Rout works well with wake when played as an instant because you can attack with the hopper on your turn and kill every creature at the end of opp.'s end of turn step.

Here's a decklist:
//Creatures:
4 Anurid Brishhopper
4 Ravenous Baloth
4 Birds of Paradise
2 Genesis
1 Glory
3 Yavimaya Elder
3 Basking Rootwalla
//Blow-Up-The-World:
4 Wrath of God
4 Rout
//Fodder/Other:
3 Mirari's Wake
3 Roar of the Wurm
3 Crush of Wurms
//Land
9 Forest
5 Plains
4 Brushland
4 Windswept Heath

That's the deck.  Crush is really only good with wake on the field.  And don't play the Rootwallas unless you need to because they make awesome fodder for the Brushhopper.  You may want to try adding armadillo cloak or wall of blossoms.  Maybe a wish sideboard with a fourth wake for golden wish and some creatures for use with living wish.  A sideboard, eh.  Up to you.  You should probaly metagame it though.  Good luck and anyone who plays this deck, let me know how it pans out.
