Windows 98 has a number of new features that speed up
the process of cleaning your P.C. This is simple
routine maintenance and keeps the unit running at its
optimum capabilities. Slowness of function, frequent
"illegal operation" shutdowns and error messages are
all indicative of the URGENT need to do maintenance.
There are 3 main steps in cleaning your unit:
Each of these functions is readily accessible by
clicking on "start".... "programs"... "accessories"
.... "system tools"... Disk Cleanup is first. Just
tell computer which drive to clean first. Disk
cleanup will delete temporary files, empty recycle
bin, etc, to remove unnecessary files. Place checks
in EACH of the squares in the window that comes up
and allow them to be deleted.
Scandisk needs to be run after disk cleanup. This
may be run on "standard" as opposed to "thorough".
Also, make certain there is a check in "automatically
fix errors". It should take about 5-8 minutes.
The 3rd and final function is "Disk Defragmenter".
This function puts back little bits of files that
are misrouted when they are put back in place
(very simplified explanation). This function takes
the longest of the three. Windows95 was programmed
to tell you that you do NOT need to run defrag if
your system is less than 7% fragmented. However,
errors can occur with even less than 1% fragmented.
Therefore, IF windows tells you that you do not
need to run defragmentation, RUN IT ANYWAY. (That is
supposedly repaired in Windows98, but I still have
some tell me that it happens.)
Depending on how much you use your PC, I recommend
that you run this routine on a weekly basis. With
windows 98, you CAN set this up to run automatically
in "scheduled tasks", but that is a personal option.
I personally run it weekly or AS NEEDED, and allow
computer to defrag while I am sleeping.
TIPS: Close ALL other programs and run this maintenance
OFFLINE. Programs on taskbar can be
closed by right clicking, then selecting
"close"...... HOWEVER, there are many OTHER
programs that are open as well. To close these
hold down control-alt-delete. A screen will
come up listing OTHER open program. HIGHLIGHT
ALL BUT SYSTRAY & EXPLORER and "END TASK"...
to close those programs. Do NOT Reboot at this
time.. Do the PC CLEAN process FIRST, then
reboot - All of the previously closed programs
in start-up will reopen at that time.
Prior to running PC clean, do a "find" for cookies
and "empty" the cookie folder. To do this, click on
start..... find...... files/folders..... and type in cookies.
Open the folder by double clicking. Then click on
edit..... select all........ hold down control and UNHIGHLIGHT
the file called "index"..... then right click (still holding
down control key) and DELETE all of the "cookies".
Prior to installing a program, run your maintenance and you will end up with a "cleaner"
installation and less chance of program
problems. (THIS is especially true of ICQ
and a number of the Windows Office programs).
