AVG Updates

A lot of people are using AVG for their anti-virus program lately. Some are using it for a "back up" anti-virus program. Lately there seem to be problems getting the updates though. Here's a way you can d/l the latest database file and install it, in case you get the dreaded "cannot connect" message. If you get that message and you know you ARE connected because you're getting mail or are in a chat program, then try the following.

Open your AVG FREE 7.0 program - check to see what version you have by looking in the lower right corner. As of 2/3/05 the version was 7.0.300 265.8.5

Click on Control Center
Doubleclick on Update Manager area
Under the Properties tab, remove the checkmark next to "Do not ask for the update source"
Click Apply, click OK and close the program.

In Internet Explorer (or Netscape or Firefox) go to http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php
When you get there, mark that in your Favorites (or Bookmarks)

Scroll down just a little you'll see some tables for Differential update. Look for the "Minimum required version" and choose the area that has a number NO LARGER than your version. For example, if your version is 265.6.2 you need to look further down for the update file that has 265.0.0

Next to that Update file you'll see a file named with a bunch of numbers & letters, ending in .bin - Click on that file name and you'll get a File Download screen asking if you want to Open or Save. You have to SAVE it. You can save it to your Download folder, if you have one, or you can just save it to your Desktop. If you save it on the Desktop, be sure to locate that icon and delete it when you've finished updating.

When the download is complete, click CLOSE - do not try it open it.

Open AVG again and click on "Check for updates" and you'll see the screen asking you Internet or Folder -- Choose Folder. You'll get a Windows Explorer type screen, and you need to locate the folder in which you saved it. Easy to do if you save to Desktop, since that'll be at the top of the list of folders.

When the OK goes from faded to black, click on it and your update will proceed as usual, and the program will be updated. You may have to close the program to see the update version and date in the lower right corner, but not always.

Download Folder

If you don't have a download folder set up, here's how you can do it, and its handy to have one, so you always have one particular place to look for anything you download.

Doubleclick on My Computer
Doubleclick on the C: drive
Click on File - New - Folder. If you catch it right away you can name it Download. If you don't, it will be named "New Folder" and you can RIGHTclick on it, then click Rename and name it Download.

The next time you download something, no matter what it shows in the Save In line, click on that space and you'll see a drop-down of your computer - Click on the C: drive and then look for the Download folder and click on it. Then click on Save and the download will begin.

Its best if you can just click "Open" after a download, but there are times when you have to save it (as with the AVG update) or when you just want to save it in case you have to reinstall something.
