I can't stress how important it is to have an up-to-date Anti-Virus program! My Norton has updated many times in the recent days. I am certainly glad that it does because it has caught three viruses sent to me in the e-mail lately. These are coming in from people that I don't know and also from people that I do know. It doesn't do you much good if you have an Anti-Virus program and you don't update it or run the scan of your computer. These are the things that keep you safe, but don't get lazy and think that you don't have to be watchful for the attachments that come to you. I would certainly hate to have a virus infect my computer because I have all the e-mail addresses of the TOT Computer Club members in my address book. And, I surely would not want to pass along a virus to everyone or to anyone, for that matter. So, if you don't know how to update or run a scan on your computer, please ask someone who does and they will help you set this up in your computer so it will scan and update for you. I have mine to automatically update when ever Norton sends a new update out. I also, scan my computer on a daily basis at 10:00am because by that time I have read my e-mail and played a couple of games and am ready for coffee and some breakfast, so, I just let it go. Some people find it more convenient to have it scan at night, so do whatever works for you. But DO IT! Better to be safe than sorry. |

GREAT KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Want to save some time using Windows? Check out these handy dandy keyboard shortcuts that I use all the time. -- ALT+TAB: Switch between open programs. Hold down the ALT key and then press the TAB key. Try it and you'll see! -- ALT+F4: Quits a program. Handy when your mouse doesn't work! -- SHIFT+DELETE: Deletes item permanently. Whatever you delete using these keys won't be stored in the Recycle Bin. -- SHIFT: Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert a CD-ROM to bypass the automatic-run feature. Love this one! -- CTRL+C: Copies what you selected and puts it in the Clipboard. -- CTRL+X: Cuts what you selected and puts it in the Clipboard. -- CTRL+V: Pastes what you cut or copied to the Windows Clipboard -- CTRL+Z: Undo the last action--A wonderful, wonderful thing. |
MOVE IT, COPY IT OR MAKE A SHORTCUT? Windows has its own rules when you "drag-and-drop" an application or file. Here's how to override the rules: 1. Move a program or file by pressing the Shift key while you drag-and-drop. 2. Copy a program or file by pressing the CTRL key while you drag-and-drop. 3. Right-click a program or file when you drag-and-drop to get a pop-up menu with a choice to move, copy or make a shortcut. |
Should I shut my computer down at night? Or is it better to leave it running? The short answer to this question is this: It doesn't much matter. But we'll go into more detail than that. Obviously, if you turn your computer off, some electricity will be saved. Maybe you'd see a saving on your power bill. Additionally, your memory resources are flushed out every time you shut down. You want to avoid a buildup of clutter here. Finally, if you shut the machine down, you can unplug it. That will protect it against late-night lightning strikes. As for the other side: Some people believe that turning components on and off causes wear. They believe things last longer if they're left on. Furthermore, many people like the convenience of not waiting for the computer to boot up in the morning. But if you prefer to turn your machine off, do so. The truth is, it really doesn't matter. |

Just a couple of tidbits that I "stole" from the Kim Komando Newsletter. I have to apologize for that this month, as we just arrived in Minnesota and I think my brain is still catching up with me from Texas. Also, a note from Yahoo Geocities, this is where our Tip O Tex Computer Newsletter is online. GeoCities will be performing scheduled maintenance starting Friday, May 17th, 2002 at 9:00 pm PST (GMT-7). Service will be restored the morning of Sunday, May 19th, 2002. So, this means that you will not be able to access this page at those times. |
