vullaththE vuraiyum mAlai vulluvAr vunar ondru ella:  Emperuman is
present inside each one of us as antaryami.  Sahasranamam starts with
Vishvam Vishnu:.  These two namas of bhagavan show his bhahirvyApthi
(presence in every place outside us) and antarvyApthi (presence inside us).
In this paasuram alwar calls emperuman to be ‘vullaththE vuraiyum mAl’.
So we have to be careful before saying anything.

We may cheat anyone outside but surely our mind knows that what we are
saying and doing is wrong.  Emperuman who is inside us will surely know
our mistakes.  Whoever understands the presence of emperuman inside
them take extra caution not to do mistakes.  Even thiruvalluvar says ‘than
nenju arivadhu poiyarkka’ that is our mind is capable of showing us
which is right and which is wrong.

kallaththEn nAnum thondAi thondukkE kOlam poondu:  But, alwar says,
unfortunately without realizing the presence of the bhagavan inside me I
tried to cheat everyone including him.  I acted to be a great bhakthan.

Initially I felt ashamed to even wear the thirunAmam on my forehead.
Slowly I started wearing the sricharanam alone that too only inside my
house.   I used to wash my face when I go out.  Then slowly I developed
courage and started wearing thiruman and sricharanam even outside.  So
people started thinking that I have become a bhakthan.  So when someone
came near me I started shouting the names of bhagavan loudly.  It made
them believe more that I am a great bhakthan.  Then I underwent pancha
samskaram under an acharya, thereby made people call be a parama
vaishnavan.  Not only the ignorant people but even emperuman regarded me
similarly.  But actually all these I did just for show off and nothing
whole heartely.  Just for name and fame I acted to be a thondan wearing all
the necessities for the same.  This is the explanation given by Sri PVP
in his vyakhyanam which goes as follows:

“parappumAra thirunAmaththai eduvadhu, Sri pancha Ayudangalai
darippadhu, ahrudaiyamAgha thirunAmaththai solluvadhu, yamAdhigal thalaiyil en
kAl enbhadhAi nAnum oruvanAi parOpadhEsam seivadhAi eththanai seidhEn”

Alwar has adviced and talked so much about nAma bhalam and how it gives
a vaishnavan a strength even to fight against yaman and his dhoodhas.
Now he says even all those where words which just came out of my mouth
but where not from my heart.  I tried to cheat everyone by acting to be
a great Srivaishnava.  My mind was working somewhere else but I talked
to people about bhagavan and bhagavat gunam.

vulluvAr vullittrellAm vudan erundhu arudhi endru:  But emperuman is
inside each one of us and he knows what all everyone of us think.  But
the funny part is even he has included me in the bhaktha list.  Bhagavan
says,”sAdureva sa mandhavya: samyat vyavasithOhi saha”(when a person
thinks about me put him in the sAdhu ghosti and never think of his good
or bad deeds).  “na mE bhaktha: pranashyathi”(my bhaktha will never
fall), “en adiyar adhu seiyAr”(my bhakthan will not do like that) and he
considers even a cheat like me to be his bhaktha, and never leaves me.
He always stays along with me.

velgipOi ennullE nAn vilavara sirithittEnE:  Thinking of all these I
feel ashamed and so I tried to go away from bhagavan.  But how can I do
that?  Emperuman is not only present inside me or inside a temple he is
there in each and every place.  “neeka mara engum nirain thulan”
“thoonilum erruppAn thurumbhilum erruppAn”  “ anthar bhahischa tat sarvam
vyapya nArAyanastitaha”.  So I realized my stupidity and laughed without
control, says alwar.  Actually laughter is contagious.  If one laughs
others follow him even without knowing the reason.  But is it not
correct for all of us to follow azhwar and laugh at ourselves, since each one
of us have the same stupid thought that we can cheat even emperuman, by
our intelligent acts?

In the previous ten paasuram alwar thus explained how he possessed no
qualification to get bhagavat krupai and how he possessed all the
disqualifications.  In the proceeding paasurams alwar says how by the
nirheduka krupai of lord ranganatha, even a person like him can get
nalla(good) gathi.  Let us see them in the next postings.
