Tarheel Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Newsletter

Volume 1, Issue 1

Welcome!

This is the first edition of the T.I.S.O.A. newsletter. The aim of this is to spread the news of upcoming events in our association. We hope to bring an issue on a quarterly basis. Feel free to add any input to the newsletter by sending any suggestions or stories to Mark Kadlecik (yellowcard@prodigy.net). I hope you enjoy!

A Note From The Editor

By Mark Kadlecik

How many of you can tell me who is the President of T.I.S.O.A.? How many members can tell me who the Vice-President is? Members at-large? I would venture to say many of us cannot answer those questions. Why?

To those of you who attended the meeting in Charlotte, I commend you. To those who had extreme circumstances and could not make the meeting, it is understood. What is ironic is the lack of representation by the general membership after seeing so many faces at the College Cup and the Adidas Showcase.

Right now I really need to question the commitment to our association. The intent for the Charlotte Business Meeting was for everyone to attend the Final Four matches and gather later on in the weekend. Instead, many people decided to go their separate ways and neglect the meeting.

I understand a State Clinic was being held during this time. However, most of the association attended the summer clinic to re-certify. I also understand some big names from the United States Federation were in town. However, we, as an association meet only twice per year.

The intent for this note is not to bash the United States Soccer Federation. The U.S.S.F. is an integral part to the growth and development of our association. The aim of this letter is to re-prioritize everyone’s obligation to T.I.S.O.A. We have some of the best matches in entire United States and many of us take this for granted. We have more Division 1 games than any other chapters in N.I.S.O.A. Show your commitment for T.I.S.O.A. by attending the summer clinic and the winter business meeting. Let’s show N.I.S.O.A. why we are one of the premier chapters in the United States!

T.I.S.O.A. has a website!

As we move into the age of technology, T.I.S.O.A. must move as well. With the help of webmaster, Alex Almaguer, we now have an active website. The site is in the beginning stages but Alex has done a great job assembling some quality information. Be sure to bookmark the site and check it regularly at: http://www.oocities.org/tisoa/index.html

Thanks Alex!

We Need a New "T"

T.I.S.O.A. needs a new name. The "Tarheel" name presents a conflict of interest in our business matters. Please email Donna Cornwall at dcornwall@waynehealth.org   with any suggestions.

Division One Game Fees Increased

After researching fees for other sports on the Division One level, the Board of Directors has approved a fee increase for all Men and Women Division One matches. The new fee structure will be $170 for the referee and $115 for an assistant referee position. Match fees for all NAIA, Division II, and Division III matches will continue to be $125, $90, and $90.

Summer Clinic to be held in Burlington

The T.I.S.O.A. summer clinic is tentatively set to be held in Burlington at the Ramada Inn and Walter M. Williams High School. Again, the clinic will be held in conjunction with the N.C.S.R.A. state re-certification clinic. The weekend events will kick off on Friday, July 27 at 7 PM and will conclude on Sunday, July 29 around 4 PM. Be sure to check the N.C.S.R.A. website (http://www.ncsra.org/) for further developments about the 2001 Summer Clinic. Let’s show the commitment to T.I.S.O.A. and mark your calendars for this event!

T.I.S.O.A. blends with Conference USA

Beginning this season Conference USA will use T.I.S.O.A officials for matches at UNCC and ECU. Members of our chapter will be used in both non-conference and conference matches at ECU. We already cover UNCC non-conference matches and now our officials will also receive assignments for UNCC conference matches. We all look forward to our developing connection with this up-and-coming conference!

Southern Conference Put On Hold

T.I.S.O.A.’s role as the assignor for the Southern Conference has been put on hold. The Budget & Finance Committee made up of member school representatives decided it was too expensive to do this year.  The Conference office badly wants the program---so badly in fact that they put the assignment fee of $10,000 into the preliminary conference office budget---to be paid by the conference, not the member schools. Hopefully, next year will be the inaugural season T.I.S.O.A. will assign the entire Southern Conference.

On a better note, T.I.S.O.A. will continue to assign the Southern Conference Tournament. The Men will play at Patriot’s Point, SC (College of Charleston, host) and the women’s side will be held in Greenville, SC (Furman University, host).

It’s Never Too Late to Start Now

by Mark Kadlecik

Although the T.I.S.O.A./NCSRA State Clinic isn’t until the end of July, the physical should be on everyone’s mind. For T.I.S.O.A. to be at the pinnacle of all chapters within N.I.S.O.A., all officials need to be as fit as possible. Anyone in our great association can call a game (you wouldn’t be in TISOA if you couldn’t): it’s the ones who are "there", in position, to make the call that make the difference. To quote the great Pat Smith, "Presence adds conviction".

The U.S.S.F. State Referee test will be administered at the clinic. A 12- minute run, 100-meter dash (ages 30-37), 50-meter dash (ages 38-over), and the staggered run will be the components for the fitness test. The requirements are as follows:

Age 12-min. 100 m / 50 m Staggered Run
Under 30 2600 m    (6 1/2 laps) 15.5 sec. 40 sec.
30-37 2400 m     (6 laps) 16.5 sec. 42 sec.
38-45 2200 m    (5 ¾ laps) 8.0 sec. 45 sec.
45-up 2000 m    (5 ½ laps) 8.5 sec. 47.5 sec.

It is very tough to train when so many of us are active doing matches throughout the summer. I am as guilty as anyone when it comes to this. You must, however, train on days that you do not have a match. Although the work you exert during a match is quite extreme, you still need to train to build your optimal endurance and speed.

Above are the minimum requirements for the fitness test. We all should aim to achieve above these standards. Earlier in this article, I challenged everyone’s commitment to the association.  Prove me wrong by your times in Burlington on July 28!

Planning for Burlington

For those of you needing accommodations you can either do one of two things:

1. Make reservations at the Ramada Inn by calling (336) 227-5541. The Ramada is located on exit 143 of 85/40.

or

2. Call Andre Sies and see if he will let you stay at his house (I think the above may be cheaper).

For those of you bringing a spouse, there are plenty of shopping venues with the Burlington Mills outlets located off exit 145. If you are planning on coming on your own from a long distance, call a fellow T.I.S.O.A. member and room with them to keep the cost down.

In any event, the summer clinic plans on being very informative and an integral spark to the upcoming 2001 season. I look forward to seeing you there!
