Boarding Suit

Rose wears this linen pinstriped suit when first boarding the Titanic with her mother, and fiancee, Cal Hockley. This suit consists of three pieces: a long jacket, with its purple velvet lapels. running down past the hips; a long skirt, nearly touching the floor, and a decorative white shirt, lined in lace around the collar.

This suit has horizontal lines on its jacket's front and back, while it has vertical lines on the sides of the jacket, sleeves, and skirt.

This suit has 11 buttions on its front, two made of white linen in the center of the two-inch wide velvet band encircling the waist, and 9 purple velvet buttons, two just above the band, three below the band down the front, and four accenting the skirt.

On the suits back are two linen buttons accenting the waist band, and a set of two velvet buttons accenting each side of the skirt.

This suit also includes a velvet tie, pinned onto Rose's shirt by a small gold tie pin, two purple earrings, and of course, Rose's large Picture Hat.

Rose's hat is made of a very stiff material (wicker I believe). Her hat is accented by its simply larger than life bow!

Despite what most filmmakers will say, I think that every costume worn by a principal character says something about that character! For Rose, this suit with it's visable lines, symbolizes Rose's feelings of entrapment, and lines in society that are not to be crossed by this young woman.

Also, her large Picture Hat gives her a feeling of importance, making her standout, making you know she is important to the story, and also gives her a feeling of vulnerability.
