Jump Dress

The Jump dress, as it's name hints, is worn in the sequence where Rose is first at dinner, and then runs uncontrollably to the stern of the Titanic, wanting nothing more than to commit suicide, until she meets Jack. This exquisite dress consists of a fully beaded bodice, with no material showing through, of black and red beads, trimmed with lace sleeves, and a lace bodice insert. The lace bodice dips in the front in a daring V and is trimmed with two black and clear rhinstone buttons. The bodice and skirt are divided by a row of beaded fringe.
This dress has a red underskirt, and over this is a layer of net with two rows of beaded circles and two rows of beaded fringe. Topping this is a layer of point d'esprit, which is divided in the center front and flows into a square train in the back. This overskirt is also beaded with many drops of black beads.
Austrian crystals, glass beading, and over 1,000 hours went into making the gown for the movie. This gown is also very heavy, about three or four pounds, due to the beading and crystals.

This gown also has a invisiable zipper down the back of the gown. The bodice with it's beading fastens at the top with hook and eyes, but below this is the twenty inch zipper, which is black and is hand stiched into the gown with red thread.
This gown, like the Dinner dress, is a very time and work intensive gown. It is made of red satin overlayed with a patterned chiffon. The top up to under the chest is completely beaded with black sequins and pearls shaped like roses and red beads between the flowers so that due to this, none of the fabric below is seen. On the neckline at the front is the little v-shaped piece of lace inserted which forms part of the border of the neckline. Formed by a cord of pearls around the complete dress, is the base of the beaded bodice.
This cord is also attached to the bottom of the satin skirt over which two layers of the patterned chiffon are to be found. On the backside of the dress the layers are longer, so that it has a little train, of about eight inches. The border of the chiffon is beaded with a small sequin ribbon, the chiffon itself has little pearl "tassles" all over. On the bottom overlay of chiffon, the skirt, there are two lines of approxamently three inches wide round beaded flowers with a distance of about a foot.
The "sound" that Rose made when she climbed over the rail on the stern was caused by the pearl cord on the bottom of the dress which is clearly to be seen in this scene of the movie, particuarlly when Rose turns to climb back over the rail, and trips on it when she puts her weight on it, in her boots, which causes her to fall.
The inside of the bodice is lined with a flesh-colored netting and also has a large, thick grosgrain waistband attached to a heavier reinforced canvas waistband. The bodice is sturdily reinforced so that all the intricate beading is kept safe during filming. Also, the red silk of the dress is satin-backed silk, which has a glossy sheen to it.
The silk is also very fine and lightweight. The silk is almost perfectly tubular, and the red silk is completely covered by extremely fine black tulle. The topmost layer of the skirt, the layer with beaded circles, hangs free and is made of this tulle.

The tulle is sewn into the waistline seam. The beading is done directly onto the tulle and does not go through the silk beneath. The bottom layer is also the same, except that the tulle layer is sewn onto the skirt itself just beneath the beaded fringe of the top layer. Inside of the bottom of the skirt are two pleated layers of red chiffon or georgette that helps to reinforce the bottom of the skirt on the inside. These two "ruffles" of chiffon, one about four inches wide, the other about seven inches wide, support the bottom layer of beaded circles and also help the dress stand out from the knees on down.
The bodice is is completely beaded all over, with the exception of the point d'esprit lace used for the short puffed sleeves and insert. This point d'esprit is also lined inside with the flesh-colored netting. The overskirt and train are made of dotted tulle with hanging beads sewn on in a diamond pattern. The edges of the overskirt has plastic sequins sewn all the way around. There are also many types of beads that were used in this gown. The bodice is made up primarily of red Austrian crystal beads, silver lined to reflect light, and black seed beads. Rhinstones are also set into the red and black beaded pattern. The silver-looking "button" embellishments seen on the sholders, bodice front, and overskirt front are not silver at all, they are a very pale blue Austrian crystal bead.
The light used during filming gave them their sivery tint. The two bottom skirt layers each have eight beaded circles with rhinstones in the center. The circles are made of large black crystal beads and help make the skirt heavy. A variety of beads was used on the "fringe" trim at the empire waist and on the two bottom skirt layers. These include black jet beads, trumpet beads, and long tubular beads, all crystal. Here is a big shock, with all these details, this gown is roughly a size four, which actually isn't that suprising when you know that Kate is 5'8" and weighs 120 pounds!
