Sinking Dress
The Sinking Dress is worn by Rose from the end of the Drawing Scene, in the car, through her search for Jack, through the sinking (under two different coats), in the freezing water, on the drift wood, onto the Carpathia and into New York! This ethreal dress has a white lace bodice crossed by bunched lavender taffeta. The square neckline in front gives way to a mediem V back.
The short sleeve overbodice is of lavender geogette. At the waist is a two toned pink sash, pulled up slightly in the back, as you can see in the photo to the left of Rose.
The skirt consists of five layers: the first layeer, divided in the front, is of pale lavender silk georgette. This layer is also divided in the back to create this dress's flying affect, as you can see in the boiler room scene.
The second layer is also pale lavender, but the edge has been dyed a pale pink. These two layers form the slight train in the back of the dress. The third layer is not divided, and is made of ivory chiffon. The fourth layer is of the pale
lavender chiffon, with the final layer being of pale lavender silk.
The bodice of this gown is overlayed with hand-beaded embrodered lace, and and hand beaded edges. The bodice also has a lavender and pink insert over the bodice disappearing under the overbodice.
The waist of this gown is embellished with a two-tone pink silk charmeuse sash which hangs two the floor. This gown, with it's five layered skirt, takes over 25 yards of fabric to create!
James Cameron was very particular about this gown inparticualer for Kate Winslet, becouse he wanted her to wear a dress that, "wouldn't look too horrible when wet." Also, over 25 articals of this dress were created for filming, since most of it's time is spent under or in salt water, which didn't help the fabric one bit, and actually caused the gowns to deteriate faster in the future, if they weren't destroyed during filming!
Here is a view of the full back of the gown. It is a reproduction by Jennifer LaConte of J. LaConte Designs, and is an exact replica as far as I can see!
