The Birth of Jesus

This picture starts off the Gospel of Matthew. The birth of Jesus is depicted in this picture. In the picture, Mary is holding Jesus, Joseph is right behind her, and the animals and shepherds are looking at the baby timidly. Soon after the birth, three magi appear to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and give them gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, in which the gold foreshadows kingship, the frankincense foreshadows priestly qualities, and the myrrh foreshadows death. The first few chapters that revolve around his birth are the only chapters in which Jesus is a child.
