Geography
Last updated 14th June 2005

These entries are intended to help you to find the venues for rallies, events, etc. Ordnance Survey map references are given, and sheet numbers are for 1 : 50000 (Landranger) maps.

For strangers to Devon note that the direct route is not always the easiest: we have a lot of narrow roads with steep hills, and meeting someone on those while towing a trailer or driving a horsebox can be bad for both mental equilibrium and clutch! We have tried to indicate good routes below, but it is always worth studying a map before starting off.

Links will take you to maps on http://www.streetmap.co.uk pages using predefined map references. These are from the 1:25000 scale maps, and only show an area about 1.5 miles square.

Barton Fields, Bickleigh (Venue for shows and rallies) OS map reference SS945087 on sheet 192
Barton fields is between the A396 Exeter-Tiverton road and the river Exe, about 1 mile north of Bickleigh.

Approaching from either direction the site is unmistakable: a flat field with an entry gate immediately next to the road, in which the paraphernalia of the event is easily visible from the road.

Butteridge Farm, Westleigh. OS map reference ST039173 on sheet 191
At the east end of the A361 link road (250 yards west of M5 J27) take the Holcombe Rogus road northbound. (Note that if you are travelling eastbound on the A361 you have to go to M5/J27, round the roundabout, and back again to get onto the sliproad which is signposted Parkway railway station.)

Alternatively approach this road via Sampford Peverell, eastbound.

Either way head north up this road toward Holcombe Rogus and Trumps. Go over the crossroads in Trumps village, and head up the hill on the other side. The road does a dogleg left/right, and about 100 yards later Butteridge farm is on both sides of the road.

Calverleigh Village Hall (Venue for parties, social events, AGMs) OS map reference SS 923143 on sheet 181
Take the Rackenford road out of Tiverton (don't turn left onto the B3137 Witheridge road itself). After about 2 miles you will rise up a hill into Calverleigh village.

Immediately after the village sign there is a layby and a pink thatched cottage. Turn left (south) between these and enter the open car park immediately ahead of you. The village hall is on the edge of the car park. (If you get to the church you have gone too far.)

Chevithorne Barton (Venue for the 2-day event) OS map reference SS985158 on sheet 181
From the M5 take the A361 westbound, and after about 6 miles turn left up the sliproad to Tiverton. Turn left (south) and go straight over the first roundabout, continuing for about half a mile to the second roundabout. At this turn sharp left onto Blundells Road (signposted to Halberton & Sampford Peverell) and continue up there for about 3/4 mile. Take the left turn (not easy to see, in a clump of houses following some playing fields) to Uplowman and continue back over the A361 to a T junction. Turn left and follow the (winding!) road for about 1.5 miles until you come to a junction signposted to Chevithorne (left), Mere and Uplowman (right). Turn right and the drive to Chevithorne Barton, which is easily visible about 100 yards on the left.

Note that you can't get to Chevithorne directly from the A361, despite its proximity; and while you could go via Bolham (on the A396 north from Tiverton) it will mean negotiating some steep and narrow roads that can be surprisingly busy since they are the route to Knightshayes (National Trust) house.

Chimney Down (Common land North of Uplowman) OS map reference ST027198 on sheet 181
At Uplowman cross turn north west then, after 400 yards, turn right up Uplowman Hill. Continue for about 4 miles: Chimney Down is a field to the left (west) of the road at the cross-roads. The entrance is immediately on the left (north east) side of the crossroads.

Churchwalls Farm, Holcombe Rogus OS Map reference ST047172 on sheet 181
From J27 on the M5 head north on the A38 (towards Wellington). After about 5 miles (about 2 miles after you cross the M5 again) the road briefly becomes a dual carriageway. Take the 2nd turn on the left, to Greenham. After about 1 mile, before you reach Greenham itself, turn left at a crossroads to Holcombe Rogus. After winding about, and crossing the stream, come into Holcombe Rogus itself and turn left (south west) towards Sampford Peverell. Come out of the village, over a crossroads, bear left at the following fork, and Churchwalls is about 1/2 mile further on the right.

Alternatively you can come north from Sampford Peverell across country from the roundabout over the A361 just west of the M5, or from Uplowman - experts with a map only in either case.

To be honest you'll probably need a map (1:50000) for this one anyway!

Conquest Centre, Bishop's Lydeard OS Map Reference ST186281 on sheet 193
The Conquest Centre is off the A358 Taunton to Minhead road, about 3 miles West of Taunton. It to the north of the road, about half way between Bishop's Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren. The turning is signposted.

Cuckoo's Nest, Uplowman (Cross-country course) OS map reference SS996152 on sheet 181
Entering Uplowman from the south (from Sampford Peverell) go over the crossroads North towards the church. Bear left, leaving the church on your right, and after 300 yards turn left to Higher Chieflowman. After about 300 yards the road turns sharp right, then sharp left, then after a straight section of 200 yards the road has another sharp right turn. At this bend go straight on down the track for about half a mile to come to Cuckoo's Nest.

Note that there is no direct access to Uplowman from the A361 link road. You need to approach from Sampford Peverell (from the South), or Tiverton (from the west). Access from the North is distinctly cross-country.

Downe Farm Venue for Dressage Training

From Tiverton on A361 take left turn at Stonelands Cross, at T junction go right, then take first left for Nomansland, follow this road for two and a half miles (approx) and take third right at Elworthy Cross, then take second right at Downe Cross. Downe Farm is approx 400 yds along on right hand side.

Fernlea Farm. (Rallies) OS Map reference SS868151 on sheet 181
From the Rackenford road out of Tiverton turn after about 5 miles left at Horestone Cross (beyond Gibbett Moor farm). Continue for about 2.5 miles, and Fernlea Farm is down a drive to the left (East).

From the B3137 Witheridge road out of Tiverton turn right (North) after about 7.5 miles at Mudford Gate. Continue for about a mile, bear right at Looseland Cross, then left after 250 yards, then straight over the crossroads. Fernlea farm is about 400 yards on the right.

Forke Farm, Pennymoor OS Map reference SS857112 on sheet 191
Take the B3137 out of Tiverton, pass through Withleigh, and about 21/2 miles later turn left at Page's Cross, towards Pennymoor and Cruwys Morchard.

After about 1/4 mile bear right at Cruwys Morchard, then after a further 1/4 mile turn right towards Pennymoor. Go over the crossroads in the centre of Pennymoor, turn right at the bend after 200 yards, and Forke Farm is the first turning on the right after about another 600 yards. (For those used to more cultural landmarks, it is exactly 1/2 mile beyond the pub in the centre of Pennymoor!)

Fry's Farm, Culmstock OS Map reference ST108135 on sheet 181
On the A38 from J27 on the M5 to Wellington turn east onto the B3391 to Culmstock. (This turning is just north of the bridge where the A38 crosses the M5).

Continue into Culmstock village (taking care on some of the bends, where the road is about 1.5 cars wide!), and continue over the bridge and approach the rise to the south of it. This rise forms a crossroads: turn left (east) and wind your way past the Church and out of the village. Fry's farm is about 1/4 mile after the Church on the left of the road.

Groubear Farm, Withleigh OS Map reference SS893119 on sheet 181
On the B3137 Tiverton - Witheridge road come west out of Tiverton for about 5 miles, passing through Withleigh.

Without a horsebox/trailer: At the cross-roads at the bottom of the hill about 1.5 miles beyond Withleigh (see the map) you can turn sharp left up a steep and narrow road then turn sharp left after about 500 yards down the lane to the farm.

With a box or trailer don't try this! Go about another mile west towards Witheridge, then turn left to Cruwys Morchard. Avoid the village centre by continuing south for about 1/2 mile, then turn left. Then follow the road eastwards as before.

Groubear farm is on the left at the bottom of a steep (but well-surfaced lane) on the left.

In either event you'll need a map - but note that with a vehicle you cannot turn left (south) in Withleigh itself and take what appears to be the shortest route to the farm from the B3137. That route is navigable on horseback or on foot only.

Heazle (Indoor arena for rallies/ showjumping near Wellington) OS map reference ST158163 on sheet 181
From the A38 at Wellington turn east towards Ford Street. Continue through the village, up the (steep but wide) hill, then go straight over the junction at the top. Heazle is about 0.6 miles along on the left.

From the M5 leave at J26 and, at the south side of the motorway take the tiny road south. After about a mile turn left towards Ford Street and continue as above.

Hornhill Tiverton OS Map reference SS963120 on (the exact bottom of) sheet 181
From the south: enter Tiverton from the A396 Exeter road. Turn right at the second roundabout (signposted M5 etc), cross the river Exe, and go straight over another roundabout. After about 250 yards turn right, signposted to the police station among other things, onto Canal Hill, continue leftish over another roundabout, then turn almost immediately right up a hill. Hornhill is about 350 yards on the left.

From the A361 link road: take the east exit to Tiverton (A396). Go over a small roundabout, then after about 400 yards turn right (signposted Exeter, Bickleigh, A396) at a second roundabout. After about 150 yards turn left onto Canal Hill, then proceed as above.

Meadow View, Templeton. (Venue for rallies) OS map reference SS 886133 on sheet 181
From the B3137 (Witheridge road) out of Tiverton:

After about 5.5 miles, about 2 miles beyond Withleigh, turn right (North) at the crossroads towards Templeton. After about 1/2 mile, at Partridge Cross, there is a turning left to Partridge Farm, and Meadow View is exactly opposite that. If you have a trailer/horsebox note that the road up from the B3137 is steep and winding, you may prefer an alternative route - see below.

From the Rackenford road out of Tiverton:

If you do not have a trailer/horsebox turn left in Calverleigh (about 2 miles out of Tiverton), signposted Templeton, and continue about 2.5 miles. At the crossroads (by Temple Cross farm) turn left (South) to Templeton.

If you do have a trailer/horsebox do not take the Calverleigh route, it's a steep single-track road with almost nowhere to pass. Instead continue up the Rackenford road for about another 3 miles, then take the left (south) turn to Templeton

From the A361 link road:

Take the turning signposted Rackenford & Loxbeare (to the south, approximately 5 miles out of Tiverton). Once on the Rackenford road turn left and take the second (after about a mile) turning right (South) to Templeton.

Once you reach Templeton (by whatever means!) continue south through the village and about 1/4 mile out the other side Meadow View is at Partridge Cross, exactly at the turning off to Partridge Farm.

Mutterton Cottage, Mutterton

From Junction 28 of M5 (Cullompton) at the top of the slip road go left, (past Mole Valley). Follow that road approx 1 mile and go right at Post Cross. Carry along this road for 2-3 miles or so, go straight over two crossroads, follow the road left through and around the farm and Mutterton Cottage is next on the left, a cottage on the road on a bend.

Newhall Equestrian Centre (Indoor arena for rallies, showjumping, etc at Budlake) OS map reference SX982993 on sheet 192
Access is from the B3181 Cullompton/Broadclyst/Exeter road. Go to Budlake and turn west onto the minor road to Killerton that crosses the M5 motorway. The entrance to Newhall farm is on the south side of that road, just before (west of) the motorway bridge - despite what the OS map says.

Alternatively you can come cross-country from the west via Silverton and Killerton. You'll need a map, and the roads are narrow, but there are no steep hills.

Note that while Newhall is right next to the motorway the nearest junction is Cullompton (J28), and that there is only limited access to/from the M5 at junction 29. Also the J29/J30 interchange has changed recently: if your map is earlier than 2000 it may not show the junction with the A30 correctly. For an online map of the dog's dinner that is now J29 click here.

Plainsfield farm, Withleigh. OS Map reference SS901127 on sheet 181
On the B3137 Tiverton - Witheridge road come west out of Tiverton for about 3 miles. The Withleigh 30 mph speed limit extends quite a long way towards Tiverton (and is a favourite revenue raiser for the local Police force!). But eventually you will see sign to the Church on the right (north).

Go up there and, after about 150 yards, turn left between Church Hall yard and the Church itself. Continue down this lane, round several sharp bends, till you come to a large field on your right with a dutch barn at its end. If you have a horsebox/trailer it is better to unload here and walk down to the farmyard, as the last section is steep and narrow.

Poltimore (Big indoor arena near Exeter for regional showjumping) OS map reference SX971971 on sheet 192
The showjumping arena is about 200 yards from the M5 motorway, but note that junction 29 (the nearest) does not allow exit from the motorway and the next nearest (J30) will introduce you to the joys of the outskirts of Exeter. Travellers down the M5 from the north may do better to leave the motorway at J28 (Cullompton).

Access is best from the B3181 Exeter/Broadclyst/Cullompton road. Immediately south of where this crosses the M5 south of Broadclyst turn north towards Poltimore. The turning for the arena is about 1 mile up the road on the right, marked by a small sign with horses. (If you reach Poltimore village you have gone too far north.)

The route from the A396 Tiverton/Exeter road at Stoke Canon is not recommended: steep narrow roads, confusing and/or missing rural signposts.

Pontispool Farm, Norton Fitzwarren. OS map reference ST176257 on sheet 193
Norton Fitzwarren is on the B3227 Taunton - Wiveliscombe road, immediately to the west of Taunton.

Coming west out of Norton Fitzwarren turn left (south) to Allerford, and after about 3/4 mile turn right. Continue straight for about 1/2 mile and the road takes a sharp bend to the left. The drive to Pontispool farm is about 75 yards further on the right, and the farm is 200 yards down the drive.

Coming east (from Wiveliscombe) turn right (south) to Oake about 2 miles after the Milverton roundabout. Go through Oake village and take the 2nd left (east) turn, about 3/4 mile from the B3227, towards Allerford. Bear left after about 500 yards, and after about another 1000 yards turn left into the drive to Pontispool Farm just before the road bends sharp left into Allerford village.

Rifton Barton Farm (Site for show & rallies) OS map reference SS893176 on sheet 181
Rifton Barton is on the north side of the A361 North Devon link road, about 4 miles west of the Tiverton/A396 roundabout. The sign for the turn is quite small, so slow down when approaching the target area or you'll whizz past.

Note: there is no vehicular access over or under the link road from the south, you have to be on the A361.

Rose and Crown Riding Stables (Livery and teaching stables) OS map reference SS925145 on sheet 181
Take the Rackenford road out of Tiverton (don't turn left onto the B3137 Witheridge road itself). After about 1/2 mile you will see a group of houses on the right (north), and the Rose and Crown pub.

The Rose and Crown stables are immediately beyond (west of) the pub on the right (north) side of the road, and it has a sign.

The stables provide riding lessons for beginners upwards, and also livery for horses and ponies. Contact Mrs Gillian Tucker (01884 252060) for more details.

Rull Farm, Cullompton. (Field for events) OS map reference ST023088 on sheet 192
On the B3181 road between Willand and Cullompton Rull Farm is actually a field to the west of the road, about 1 mile north of Cullompton.

It is easily visible from the road, and will be recognisable by the paraphernalia associated with the event.

Southwood (Venue for rallies and showjumping practice) OS map reference SS938093 on sheet 192
Southwood is located in the hills to the west of the A396 Tiverton/Exeter road, about 1.5 miles north of Bickleigh.

It can be approached from the main road at East Barton farm, but beware that the drive is steep, poorly surfaced and has a tight bend. It is generally better to approach from above via Seven Crosses: from the one-way system around West Exe in Tiverton turn left to Cotteylands and then continue up the hill. You'll need a map if you haven't done this before: Southwood is marked on the 1:50000 map. Note that when you have turned into Southwood from above you should bear left towards the house, then sharp right down to the arena. If you go straight on over a cattlegrid you've gone the wrong way into a farmyard.

Tiverton Foxhounds Kennels OS Map reference SS933125 on sheet 181
Take the B3137 Witheridge road out of Tiverton. About 1 mile up Long Drag hill turn left (South). Go up the rise, over the crossroads, and the Kennels are on the left of the road.

Uplowman OS map reference ST015155 on sheet 181
Uplowman village cannot be reached directly from the A361 link road. You need to approach either via Sampford Peverell, or from Tiverton by turning off Blundells road (about 200 yards beyond the end of the 30 mph limit).

Willicroft OS map reference SS875176 on sheet 181
Take the A361 link road west from Tiverton. About 6 miles after the Tiverton roundabout turn left (signposted Rackenford). After about 50 yards turn right, and Willicroft farm is about 150 yards further along on the right (North) side of the road. Go past the farm entrance, and take the next driveway, past the house, to parking and the arena beyond.
