Sr. Weyrling

Reggina looked up into the eyes of her dragon and said, “Foanith I don’t know what I’m going to do with you.” The green cocked her head to one side and said, What do you mean? Reggina crossed her arms and said, “You know exactly what I mean Foanith.” The green pawed and said softly, Yes I know. I will not go after the blues anymore. The greenrider rolled her eyes. “That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about being mean to them, or any dragon. I don’t want to see you using teeth or claw on another dragon again, and I don’t care if you were just playing,” she added as she saw Foanith about to protest. Alright Reggina I’ll try not to do it again. She smiled and then placed a hand on her dragon’s shoulder. “Ok then, what would you like to do today?”

Foanith sighed and said, There is nothing to do today. And besides, don’t we have a weyrling training class today? Reggina put a hand to her head and said, “Oh that’s right. I totally forgot about that!” Foanith sighed again and laid down, tail curled around her. What time must we go to that? Reggina shrugged. “I don’t know, let me go check the sheet,” she said as she walked from the room. She went to the small desk in the corner of the room and picked up the training sheet. Let’s see, she thought to herself. Today at seven, she told Foanith. She walked back into her dragon’s room and said, “I’ll be reading until then all right?” Foanith nodded and Reggina walked back into the other room, flopped into one of the chairs and then reached for her book.

Reggina sat and read until Foanith’s voice popped into her head. Reggina, we must go now if we are not to be late. She put her book down, stretched and then when into the other room and strapped the riding saddle to Foanith’s neck. They were now in their last months of training and were allowed to fly to the bowl now. She pulled the straps tight and then pulled herself up. When she had strapped herself in she patted Foanith’s neck and said, “All right let’s go.” Foanith warbled happily and walked out towards the edge of the ledge. She looked down and then gracefully glided from the cold stone and out into the warm morning air. They circled the Weyr a few times and then Foanith landed in the bowl, a few hundred feet from where the senior weyrlings were meeting.

The green walked towards toward the group and then let her rider dismount. Reggina brushed a lock of hair out of her face and then stood facing the weyrlingmaster, waiting for her assignment. “All right, now that you’re all her we can begin,” D’tol said. “Today we’ll be working on working with firestone. For those that are riding greens, this is optional. If you wish not to have your dragon chew then I’ll have a different assignment for you. I’ll let you guys talk it over and then I’ll give you the assignment.” Reggina nodded and turned to her dragon. “What do you want to do Foanith? If you chew you’ll be able to flame but then you’ll be rendered sterile and won’t be able to clutch.” Foanith looked at her rider and said, Is there a way to do both? Reggina smiled sadly and said, “No, you can only do one or the other. However, you could clutch and then you could chew, which wouldn’t have any affect on you.” Foanith nodded. Let’s do that. When I am old enough I will clutch and then I will learn how to breathe fire.

Reggina smiled at her dragon and then walked off to find D’tol. When she found him he asked, “What does she prefer to do?” Reggina brushed her hair back again and said, “she wishes to clutch and then learn to chew.” D’tol nodded. “Yes I thought that was what she would suggest. Well would you like to continue with the wings today or take the day off? If you go with us you’ll be acting as ground guard,” he said. Reggina sighed. “I’m not sure if she’ll have enough stamina for ground guard sir.” D’tol shrugged and said, “Well then we’ll find out won’t we. Now go mount up so we can get out of here.”
