The Saiyan Saga basically starts out with Goku all grown up, he has a wife Chi-chi and a son called Gohan. Gohan is very young when Dragonball Z starts, but he is powerfull non-the-less; and by the end of The Cell Saga he is the strongest ever character in Dragonball Z (that is until Goku and Vegeta form together to become Vegeto!).
The Funny thing is that Chi-chi is also quite powerfull, she is considered the strongest female Earthling!
So, Goku settles down with his family to lead a normal life...but not for long...
...a mysterious stranger appears on Earth and claims to be Goku's brother! As Goku's friends ask each other questions about this mystery man, the truth finally comes out. The mystery man says that his name is Raditz and that he and Kakarot (this is the name he calls Goku by) belong to a race known as Saiyans.
The Saiyans are an alien race that use their extraordinary powers to take over planets and sell them to high bidders.
Raditz asks Goku to re-join him, and when he refuses, Raditz becomes enraged with anger and kidnaps Gohan. Pissed off, Goku tries to attack Raditz but sadly, Goku is knock to the floor like a rag doll.
Despite the difference in power, Goku decides to attack Raditz just before he leaves.
Then Piccolo (from the planet Namek) arrives. Piccolo has been Goku's rival for quite some time, but they deside to put aside their differences and concentrate on attacking an even bigger menace than each other - Raditz. The two warriors move in for the hit, but despite their joined power, the duo find Raditz to be stronger.
As Goku lays on the ground helpless, it looks like it could all be over...that is until Gohan makes his first move, he charges at Raditz with a powerfull punch that weakens him enough for Goku to move in. Goku grabs Raditz which allows Piccolo to do his Special Beam Cannon Attack but because Goku was in firing range, it takes him down too.
Goku and Raditz lie dying on the ground. Piccolo informs them both that he has created something called a dragonball, he has created seven of these and when they are all found and brought together a special dragon is summond, this dragon grants you one wish. Piccolo says that he thinks Goku's friends will surely be the first to find all seven dragonballs, and when they find them their wish will be to resurrect Goku. Raditz lets out a big laugh and says to Piccolo " I have a powerlevel reader with me that is also a transmitter, the other saiyans on planet Vegeta are listening to us right now, in one year they will come down and destroy you all! And there's nothing you can do about it because the're more powerfull than me, the're going to find all the dragonballs before you do so you can't resurrect Kakarot!" Piccolo finishes Raditz off and notices that Goku's friends have joined their fallen comrade.
