ENVIRONMENTAL EARTH SCIENCE ISSUES PROJECTS 1999-2000

This project description includes a Purpose statement, then the Structure of the project, the Grading mechanism, the Process to be followed, and a Research Outline.

PURPOSE: This Project will enable students to learn about issues in greater depth than is possible during the regular course. While increasing the depth of your learning, you will provide service to your school, community, and the world at large through the internet.

STRUCTURE: Students will pick preferred environmental earth science topics of study and a research Team of three students. The Teams do not necessarily have to be made up of students from the same class. The Teams will plan and research those issues together outside of class time, and will publish their work on the internet. Training in programming for the internet will take place during class, and access to a computer is available during study halls and after school.

GRADING: Each marking period's work will receive the same credit as two lab reports, and will be averaged in with the lab grades.

PROCESS
Second Marking Period.

  1. Choose an issue from a list of topics and two partners to work with (at least one partner must have internet access at home).
  2. Create a personal home page web site for your project. Many internet service providers host web sites for their customers, or you can set up a free personal home page with companies such as Yahoo Geocities or Angelfire.
  3. Research the issue and create an annotated bibliography of information sources. These sources can include Learning Center materials, town library materials, CD-ROM encyclopedia listings, World Wide Web sources, local organization contacts, and any other appropriate sources. There should be at least ten references total, and each item in the outline below should be suported by at least two of these refences. In addition to the usual bibliographic information , the annotated bibliography should include discussion of the usefulness and reliability of the sources, as well as the date when you verified their availablity.
  4. Create a web page for this bibliography with links to the online sources. An example bibliography is available.

Third Marking Period.

  1. Write a web-linked, indepth, referenced paper about the issue for web publication using a standard outline (see below).

Fourth Marking Period.

  1. Contact local organizations that may be able to use the information to let them know your info is on the web. Ask them to critique your paper and incorporate their suggestions if appropriate.
  2. Extra credit: Assist a local organization, government body or business involved in your issue to use your work.

Copies of your project will be kept on the school web site as reference material.
