USS THOMAS JEFFERSON 618 ASSOCIATION

As
you make your plans for 2004, be sure to put the USS Thomas Jefferson
Reunion Seven on your calendar. We
are going to be back in Connecticut this year. Our dates are September 8th
-12th.
Paul Orstad and his committee have been hard at work and have put
together a great package. They have planned a clambake, a tour of the Sub Base
and attending a graduation, a visit to a Russian sub and a Memorial Service.
There will also be other activities as well as time to visit and swap sea
stories.
The Association business meeting will be
held Saturday morning and the Banquet on Saturday evening.
For more details, see Paul’s
letter on pages 4 & 5.

BUSINESS MEETING
On Saturday September 11th, we
will hold the business meeting. At that time we will select the area for
Reunion Eight. If you have suggestions, you may submit them to TJ Commander Ron
Bekech or Secretary Don Terrill prior to the reunion or bring up your suggested
location at the meeting.
Another item on the agenda will be the
election of Officers. Your voice in the Association is important. Do plan to
attend!
Shipmates:
I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays. At our house, the plates were constantly full and the grandchildren kept us on our toes. We had the usual family affairs and the neighborhood gatherings. So far, the new year has been peaceful; however, I know that is about to change in a hurry.
It is 2004. Did you pay your annual dues? Please take a few minutes after reading this newsletter and send in your checks. It is your support that keeps the USS Thomas Jefferson 618 alive. Furthermore, it is reunion time. Paul Orstad and his committee have been working feverishly since the summertime to put the right plans together for our next USS Thomas Jefferson 618 family reunion. It is scheduled for this September in New London, Connecticut; and, there will be plenty of events to keep everyone amused besides the socializing with the crew and old friends.
In addition to the social events, there will be the Association Business meeting on the morning of Saturday, Sept 11th. I urge you to attend this meeting. This is your chance to speak up and support your association. At this year’s meeting, we will be electing new officers to run the association. If there is anyone interested in volunteering to run for an office, please submit your name and the position to Don Terrill or me. A key business issue that is resolved at these meetings is the location and time for the next reunion. Sites and times are selected and voted upon by the crew. Attend, speak and help us make the right decisions. This is your association. The officers represent you and the events that they plan should be your plans.
So take a few minutes right now and mark you calendars. Then, pickup your telephone and make your reservations by calling either call Paul or the hotel; whichever you choose - do it. With your support and attendance, we can make this reunion the best and most rewarding. And if it means anything, I have attended all the TJ reunions.
God bless America !!!!
See you in September……..
Ron Bekech
Commander

The Reunion committee that started off on the right foot is Paul Orstad, Dave Copper and Dan Higgins. We have meet several times in August and September and found us the best deal we can get for our reunion. September is still a heavy tourist area along the Connecticut shoreline. Our host Hotel will be the Radisson Hotel in Downtown New London. The whole down town area is in its walking distant. Bank Street has been getting a new face-lift for the past three years and downtown New London has really cleaned up the eyesores that have been there in the past. The old sound lab has been completely torn down and the old fort has been restored for public viewing.
The reunion dates are from September 8 to 12th as it will follow Labor Day weekend and precede the USSVI National Convention in Saratoga, NY, which is the next week 14 to19 of September 2004. Room rates will be $99. plus 6% State and 6% sales tax. We will have a hospitality room off the main lobby and control the locks on the doors. You can make your reservation by calling the Radisson Hotel at (800-333-333) or our direct number in New London, CT. (860-443-7000) by August 9, 2004. When making your reservation, attendees must identify themselves as being with USS Thomas Jefferson. More will be added later. We have 30 rooms blocked and we can get more when the 30 rooms are booked. Our Host is Denise Ellis who is married to a Submariner stationed at the Sub Base.
Brief Agenda:
Wednesday: Check In, open hospitality room, Meet new and old shipmates.
Thursday New England style Clam Bake at Shennecosset Yacht Club in Groton,
CT (1200 to 1600)
Friday Visit Submarine School Graduation /School.
Visit Submarine Museum and do memorial service in Afternoon.
Harbor tour –Dinner (planned but not confirm yet)
Saturday Business Meeting, Ladies shopping
Tour Russian Foxtrot Submarine in Providence, RI
Golf tourney at Sub base
Banquet
Sunday Farewell breakfast.
Of all that is listed above is subject to change except the clambake and business meeting.
We have plenty of time to get all in order. I have asked three more to join the reunion committee and will add their names in next newsletter or to the Web page at http://www.oocities.org/tjssbn618/ThomasJefferson.html. The webmaster (Sandy Cook) and the Radisson will be having a reunion web page where you can go to and get up to date information concerning the reunion.
Also we are going to have an area where you who have pictures of the years you were onboard and would like to show them off, we will have a board set for you to do that.
Well shipmates that’s a start for the next reunion. If you have any special needs or requests concerning the reunion now is the time to let us know so we have some time to work on it. Also if you would like us to add something to reunion also let us know. The prices for all the above will not be known until March or April. The only price we know now is the Hotel and that was the best we could get for the whole region. There are a large amount of wedding and graduations parties the weekend we want and following. I tried to get it for those of us who are going to the USSVI a.k.a. “Sub Vets” national convention to save cost in travel.
