There is one aspect to the Model A Hobby that can not be attained in any of the related Model A interests. There is no feeling greater then getting in your Model A and driving somewhere. It could be to a National Meet hundreds of miles away, or it could be to your neighborhood ice cream stand on a warm summer night. Nothing within the hobby compares to this feeling. To those of you that own an “A” and drive it, you know what I’m talking about. That steady putt-putt of the engine or the smiles and waves you get driving down the street. Unfortunately the feeling we get when we drive an “A” is a feeling that a younger generation isn’t fully unaware of. Due to the costs and expertise needed to restore a Model “A” these days, many younger people are unable to buy or restore their own car. If only there was a way to make owning and restoring a Model A more affordable… Enter the Model A Youth Restoration Assistance Program. The Restoration Program was created by John D. Marshall and is aimed at drawing a Younger Generation into the fun and rewarding task of restoring an “A”. While getting members of the club to actively participate and make a difference. How the Program will work. The program will be comprised of two different groups, the Junior Restorers, and the Knowledgeable Adults. Both groups will be made up of individuals who have pre-registered and have been approved to be enrolled in the program. The Junior Restorers will register into the program by supplying a letter written by his/her Region’s President on club letterhead stating that the individual is in fact restoring a Model A to a Blue Ribbon condition. The applicant must also write a letter stating their involvement within the Model A hobby. Upon being accepted into the program they will be given access to a list of Knowledgeable Adults who have volunteered to help in a particular part of the restoration. For example… We have a member who is 16 years old and is restoring a 1929 Coupe. He has a distributor that he would like to have rebuilt by someone who has experience in doing so. Since he is registered in the Restoration Assistance Program he takes out his contact list and notices that there is someone in Massachusetts who is all prepared to help a younger club member get a car on the road only if it means rebuilding a distributor. The two members get in contact with each other and work out a deal that the distributor will be rebuilt for the cost of parts and shipping. NO OVERHEAD LABOR CHARGE!!! This is going to serve a purpose that is beneficial to everyone in MARC. It first and foremost is going to get more Junior Members involved in MARC, one of the biggest tasks MARC is currently working on. It will put another Model A on the road, and another Model A on the road is always a good thing. Last but not least, it will get members of the club scattered all over the country to work together and do something they enjoy. What we need right now. We need knowledgeable adults who are willing to restore a particular part or parts for the price of parts and shipping. Areas that we are looking for include, but are not limited to; Brakes Carburetors Distributors Generators Headlights Horns Shock Absorbers Speedometers If you are able to restore any of the above mentioned items and are willing to help out younger club members, please contact me at the address below and I will send you all the information you will need. Contacting me will not automatically put you in a position of being in the program, it is just for more detailed information on what would be expected of you and what you should expect. T.J.
