45 kilometers from Raub town center, Pahang State, Malaysia

Raub town and district itself, though very much developed by now, was still regarded by many as a remote town in one corner of the Main Mountain Range. Unknown to the people outside, the State government had modernized many important areas. Those they felt was remote by their standard. Put in facilities and encouraged visitors to check out these "out of the way" destinations. I had heard about a waterfall in the deep mountains from friend in the 4X4 club. But since the mountains behind Raub is such a long stretches of terrains, I could not get a proper fix as to where would be the place, described to me! This time while traveling to Gua Musang from Raub via an internal road, we noticed the huge signboard, that had the name of a waterfall mentioned. One mission was planned to check out the place.

 The main waterfall

Description of place

This internal main road from Raub town to the Palm Oil settlement in Sungei Koyan was used by the locals. This particular road was the so-called "Alternative". Alternative as this is a short cut to Gua Musang town. Using this road you will exit in Padang Tungku bypassing Kuala Lipis town. Cutting short your journey by 25 kilometers.

Today, traffic on this stretch could be fairly heavy. Considering the fact that this is a deserted  country road and also not of  the width of a interstate highway. Until this road out of Raub reaches Kampong Koyan, both sides of the road was mainly cultivated passing through a small patch of jungle. Therefore except for one new village outside Raub, along the whole way, there was really no houses. Prominent signboard prompted us to make the correct turning to a picnic area. Then, we took the dedicated road to the waterfall. This scenes along this remote road was something different. Views were that ranged from pristine jungle to that of small villages. The whole way, the road was level. We were traveling on a road on flat surfaces of a river basin inside a valley.

Right into the furthest part of the road, after 38 kilometers, the paved portion ended. Here, was the Orang Asli resettlement area. Open country with estates and orchards. A TNB sub station and suspension bridge etc. For the first time we could see the river very clearly. Very promising too. The park area was another 3 kilometers inside the "jungle". So we thought and what a small signage said. Yeah! something like that. We followed the signage and eventually found what we came for. The park was just like any other Park in developed Selangor state, with canteen and toilets. This place was not the edge of a hill nor a dead end before some jungle. Just a broad level ground where the river was passing over a flat and broad piece of boulders. The waterfall - its height and how dramatic its was etc, could all be told by the picture above. From the Park, a clay road continues for some kilometers through orchards, I presume to some foothills. Still on level ground until the slopes of the hills. We saw that the locals traveled this track in doves going about their daily collection from the jungles.

Coming back to the Park itself, this place would be good for any weekend outing. The ambience here was just like as in any other urban park. As it was not a crowded destination, it could even be a much better place. To the locals, for example residents from Raub, this would be an ideal place. But for those who had to make the many kilometers journey, then this place would be nice for first timer. But I know that many would find time just to experience that kind of sentiments?.

What is recommended

First of all, this would be a good place for picnic and camping. I would say it appeared safe. If that is the case, there is nothing special that I need to alert you about. You know all about getting ready for an outing. I personally find the traveling there interesting. It is the feeling that I have seen that part of the country. Then there is the town of Raub to check out, as a side trip. Having done that sort of trip, it should be a feeling of "Good to know" that you have tried out and also knowing the road conditions of the slip road to Gua Musang. Not much people have time for such weird interest, but that's it.

How to get there

Mentioned briefly on top. Get to Raub town and then choose the alternative road to Gua Musang. Then on the way, you will be guided by road signs. The turning to the waterfall road is a "T" junction. From Raub it should be a turning to the left. Where the high mountains are! Just take note that at the end of the road, you would be on the other side of the same mountain as Slim River is. That town is on the western slope.

Oh! I wish I find time to put up those extra pictures
