The Battery was a part of 22 Mountain Regiment, the Corps D'Elite of the Indian Army. He was the Brigade Major of an Artillery Brigade from August 1965 to March 1968. He was later the General Staff Officer Grade II of a Corps Artillery Brigade from February 1972 to June 1975. He took part in the 1962 Operations as an Observation Post Officer, at Bomdila. He was the Second-in-Command of the Heavy Regiment during the 1971 Operations. He retired on 30 June 1986.

Currently, he is the Director of Institute For Strategic Research and Analysis, a Non Government Organisation, which he along with some interested Service Officers, IAS and Police Officers as well as academicians, helped set up in June 2000. He also is a former Deputy Director of Strategic Research Centre. He took to writing on Service matters after retirement. Apart from a number of articles in Defence Magazines, like the Indian Defence Review, Defence Today and the Strategic Analysis, he has a syndicated column at Indiavotes.com .He has also authored the following books:-
