DRAGONCON 2002
meets the Moulin Rouge!
It's Spectacular, Spectacular!
It truely is like Mardi Gras for Sci/Fi geeks.
I can't begin to describe how much fun this whole weekend was!  After last September's long drive home, I began thinking about DraconCon 2002 and knew that I would come up with something interesting. I had seen Moulin Rouge in the theaters more times than I have seen Star Wars EP I & II on the big screen.  I absolutely LOVE that movie!  I couldn't get over how much the interior of the Moulin Rouge night club scene reminded me of the nightly festivities at DragonCon.  The two worlds were destined to collide!
I decided to make myself a can-can dress in the winter of 2002 to wear to the TransWorld Masquerade ball in March.  It is an international trade show for Halloween costumes and party accessories.  I had never been to it before, so I tried to think up the scariest thing I could possibly think of.....that could incorporate the can-can dress.
I came up with Jar Jar Gabor.  It was a hit at the trade show ball, even though few of my friends saw it.  This summer I decided to milk it for all it was worth.
Meanwhile, in Wisconsin and Georgia and in other states, other Moulin Rouge fans were working on their can-can dresses and other MR costumes.  I wrote a few emails and suggested that we get together in our MR costumes at some point during DragonCon 2002.  Here are a few of the resulting pictures.
Incidentally, this was the first time I had ever met Jeff Allen (studiocreations) and he will now forever be burned into my memory as Harold Zilder!  He makes such an excellent Zidler!  You can bet that we will be doing this again next year and it will be bigger and better.  If you have or plan to make any MR costumes, please contact me and I will keep you up-to-date on the MR happenings.

Meesa-luva-you!
This memory will forever be seared into my mind like a third-degree burn!
Yeah Baby!
Ooh La-La, Bay-bee!!!!
You can never have too many can-can girls!
Here's my little number for the Bal du Moulin Rouge!
After awile, everything seemed to be coming off!  Eek!
It just ain't right!
Here is the Friday night "Moulin Rouge" group that we got together with Stacey (ObiWannabe) in her lovely yellow can-can dress in the center with Austin Powers (darthgoat) looking as shag-a-dellic as ever!
Zsa Zsa Binks
....makes yet an other appearance!
Here I am in my subtle fuscia, teal and black lace,  sequin-trimmed number.
Will it ever get old??  --Not in 2002!
Left to right =
Me (Jar Jar Gabor), Rachel in the Black Diamonds, Jeff Allen as Zidler, Jeff's wife & Holly Frey as more can-can girls, and Quincy in the mini-me Pink Diamonds.  The were a few other lonely Moulin Rouge dancers sitting on the sidelines for this.  They
WILL be on floor for next year's activities!   You can count on that!
Left to right =
Rachel in the Black Diamonds, Stacey as Nini-Nine legs in the air, Jeff Allen as Zidler, darthgoat as Austin Powers, Jeff's wife & Holly Frey as more can-can girls, and me again as the luscious Gungan Lady Zsa Zsa!
.....and then I met SPAT.

Who says it's just the girls taking it off and the boys looking on!!
We will get these gents into something a little more suited to
Turn-of-the-Century Parisian fashions next year ....
--and then they can take that off too!
EEK!
This moment made the entire drive there and back worth it.  You have absolutely no idea how much I laughed my ass off right here.  I had heard of this 'Spat' thing before.  I assumed it was some strange urban legend.  He  was pointed out to me the day before and I introduced myself.  I gave him one of my TrooperCon badges.
I let him choose one.
He picked out the "Crayon Garrison" badge.
(That whole thing is sort-of a double inside joke.)
I thought that in itself was incredibly strange and unusual.  I doubt my reputation preceeds me as much as his preceeds him so I chalked it up to meeting interesting new people.   Move along, Move along.
Anyway, the next night, he totally blew my mind when I saw him dressed as Return of the Jedi's Princess Leia in her slave costume AND wearing the Crayon Garrison badge!!
I think
Spat is my kindred spirit, because his mind must be as messed-up as mine.  Not only to come up with some thing like this, but also to go through with it.
....and then there were the $1 beers in the Hyatt lobby bar.
It just doesn't get any better than this, folks.
All I can say is that life must have some sort of meaning.
I know it.
