Galactic Senate Representative from the Planet of Naboo, Jar Jar Binks (Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones) Over-all WINNER of the CostumeCon21doll costume competition, April, 2003 |
I used the photograph from the Star Wars Episode II Visual Dictionary as the basis for the costume design. The character of Jar Jar Binks is a computer generated animation, so there were not any ‘real’ models upon which to base the costume. This character’s costume is strongly influenced by African patterns and designs, so I figured that is where I would begin to search for appropriately scaled materials. I found a neutral colored perfectly diamond textured piece of home décor fabric that needed to be dyed to a pumpkin color to more closely match the color of the character’s costume. I used a Rit brand dye to achieve the color. This was to become the tunic of the character’s costume. I decided to draw out the pattern for this piece first, since I only bought and dyed exactly enough material to make this once. I figured out how to make the sleeves by using bias tape and gathering the sleeves at both the cuff and the elbow. I sewed a black cording on top of each lower sleeve and then inserted the elastic into the casing. I lined the lower portions of each sleeve and then filled them with polyester fiberfill so they would stay ‘puffed’. I found a nicely scaled printed material that I used for the vest. I was forced to make it with a yoke, since I did not quite buy a wide enough piece. I lined it with a dark brown nylon material. I purchased 1 3/4 yards of three different beaded trims for the doll costume. I sewed them together to form the epaulettes. I used black glove leather for the tops of the epaulettes. They are removable and attached with tiny snaps. I used various bits of jewelry to make the pendant, including a piece of a broken watchband. |
