Where Is He? By Tanya Lour Copyrighted July 28, 2000 |

She wakes with a jolt, her chest feels tight and her body is cold. Dear God how much longer, as it all comes flooding back and tears fill her eyes, she asks, "God where is he?" At the store, later that day, she walks down the aisle to get some milk. There on the carton she sees a small boys face, and tears fill her eyes as she asks, "God where is he?" On the news that night, she sees a missing child and mother re-union. The boy looks so familiar. Smiling through tears, as she hears the crowd cheer, she asks, "God where is he?" As she sets on her bed, she sees the picture of father, mother and son. "I love you", she says, "I’ll never give up." With tears in her eyes she cries, "God where is he?" She reaches for the letter, that lies by her bed. Once again she reads what he wrote. "I will be home for Christmas mom and dad, don’t ever forget I love you." With tears burning her eyes she asks, "God where is he?" 1968 was the year, she remembers with pain in some far off land called Laos. That was the place where they said they last saw his face. With tears in her eyes, she asks, "God where is he?" |
All of his buddies told them, "He was alive." They fought with all they had to get to him. Night fell, and they had to pull back. The next day, with tears in their eyes, they cried "God where is he?" All that remained was his gear and that is all she has after so many years. POW/MIA was all they could say. Years later they said it had to change, KIA, was now the name of the game. This they said was some new government rule, and she screamed inside, "God where is he?" Her husband is gone as he died last fall. The KIA news was the last straw. They had stood and fought side by side for answers, till with his dying breath all he could say was "God where is he?" She puts up his letter and turns out the light. She feels so feeble and gray, and begins to pray maybe God, when I get where I am going, I will find out what you are all knowing, "Where is he?" They lay her to rest next to his place, with his father on the other side. They had his picture placed into the stone and written beneath it was their final plea, "GOD WHERE IS HE?" I set and I wonder, what would this be like, to go through life, never knowing. The only comfort could be, they are now three, and with Gods will, forever they will be. |
