Narcissus

NARCISSUS in Greek Mythology
Pronounced: nar-SIS-us
Derived from the Greek word "narke" meaning "sleep, numbness or stupor".

The Narcissistic Personality Disorder "NARCISSISM" also known as (NPD) is named after the ancient Greek myth of Narcissus the son of the river god Cephissus & the nymph Leiriope. He was a handsome young Greek man who refused the love of the nymph Echo. As punishment for his cruelty, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water.

One day, while getting a drink from the water of a fountain, he saw his own reflection on the water & began to be obsessed with it. It grew so serious that later when he became distraught, he died because he could not touch or embrace his own image.

His body was not found, instead in his place laid a flower that was purple inside with surrounding white leaves. The flower is still known today as Narcissus.

According to another source, Narcissus consoled himself and sat gazing into the water to remind himself of the features of his look-alike twin sister who had died.
