In Your Absence:

In this week's lesson, which came from Psalms 50:7-13, 23 and Psalms 66:13-15, we learned about the importance of giving to the Lord's work. As Christians, we should give regularly, devotedly, faithfully, and generously. Many would say that we live in uncertain times and that those uncertainties excuse us from any kind of long-term, personal commitment to the Lord and His work. However, such a statement cannot be thought of as an accurate reflection of Christ's example and attitude. He gave His all, and it would be good for each of us to do the same. While giving may not be a "salvation" issue, it is definitely a "spiritual" issue. And while God may not need what we have, our offerings do honor Him and give Him one more way that He might use us to minister to others. But the secret to correct, spiritual giving is to do so in the right spirit and from a heart of love. May we never present our offerings to the Lord with a negative, resentful attitude.

Another important aspect of our giving is to identify that which we are supposed to give. It is true that we need to be regular, devoted, faithful, and generous in our commitment to God, but what is it exactly that we are supposed to be regular, devoted, faithful, and generous about? The writer of this Psalm would answer that question by saying everything! To think that our giving is intended to somehow be limited only to money is really missing the point. As Christians and as those who already enjoy a personal relationship with Him, the Psalmist is telling us that we should be eager to reach others for the Lord, no matter what it takes! He is saying that we should be eager to use our financial resources to minister to others, but he is also saying that we should be eager to use our time and talents for that purpose, too. A Christian's devotion to Christ should not stop just before the passing of the offering plate, but it also should not stop just after. Instead, each of us should strive to do all that we can, with all that we have, to reach others for Christ.

As you go through the coming week, be faithful to the Lord and try to use what you have to point others to Him. Regardless of how your life may be challenged, try to hold your head high and realize that the God Who created this world loves and cares for you. And as always, make it your goal to serve Him and to tell others what He has done for you.
