SURRENDERING YOUR PET
STRAY DOGS

We take in strays only from Saranac Lake (township of harrietstown) area.
If you live in Tupper lake, you must contact Tom Fee, the DCO in that area. You can reach him through the Police Department.
If you live in the Lake Placid area, you must contact  the DCO for that area. He can  be reached through the Lake Placid Police Department. In any other area other than Saranac Lake, please call your local police or town hall to find out who your Dog Control Officer is for your area.
If you find a stray cat in either Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake or Lake Placid,
than we can take in that animal.
If you cannot keep your pet for whatever reason, please consider trying these ways of placement before coming to us.

*Placing adds in the paper
*Flyers up in town:
(post office, department stores, bulletin boards etc)
*If your dog is a purebred, contact
rescue groups for placements
*If your dog is a mixed breed but resembles more of a purebred, contact
rescue groups for placements
*place adds at your
local shelter
*place adds at the
local vets
*post your pet on the internet at
petfinder.com
or at free trader online
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT OUR KENNELS ARE ALWAYS FULL.
If your dog or cat is aggressive, has a histoy of biting or snapping, we cannot take in this animal.
we cannot adopt aggressive animals out for liability on our shelter.
please contact your
vet for alternative suggestions.

If your pet is sick, please bring them to the vet prior to surrendering them to the sheler.
If you have unsuccessfully tried to place your pet, or an immediate health problem causes you to quickly find a home for your pet, PLEASE contact us before you come over with your pet. We will need to try and make room.
If your dog or cat has a crate, dishes, leashes, litter boxes, toys, bones and or beds, PLEASE bring them with your pet. If you have health records, please bring those as well.
If you do not have records on hand, please contact your Vet for copies to bring to us.

If you are moving, PLEASE do not wait for the last minute to contact us about bringing in your pet. Please try placing them ahead of time, and contact us as soon as you know (or are thinking of) moving.
Our kennels are always full, and at the time we may not be accepting animals due to lack of space. We suggest you call ahead of time to find out.
Please be understanding because we do the best we can do, and cannot accomodate everyone.

If the reason you are surrendering your pet is because of money issues, call us,  we can help you out as best as we can so you can keep you pet. We can provide food and assistence with medical care until you can get on your feet again.


We do not have a turn-in fee, but we ask for a donation to help with food, medical attention or anything else they may need. If it is possable to have your dog or cat altered prior to turn in, it would help us out greatly.


We do NOT take in large animals like horses, cattle, goats, or anyother farm animal.  We may be able to help place them or foster them out.
If you have small animals like rats, mice, birds, rabbits, ferrets, fish, lizards, snakes  etc, we ask you to bring in their cages and provide food for them.
If you do not live in the Tri-Lakes Region (Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Lake Placid) We cannot take in your animal. You will have to contact your town's shelter.
If you do not know where to look, you can call the vet's office, town hall, or dog control officer for information.
You can also find lists of shelters on the internet.
