OFFENSES MADE AND PROMISES TO KEEP

by T'Lin -- 0601.07

It had been a long day, and McCoy was tired ... sleep was the only thing on his mind, as he made his way home. Funny how he had thought that being home, teaching at the Academy, would be more relaxing than zipping around the galaxy, never knowing from day to day what you'd encounter. He couldn't have been more wrong.

Between the classes he taught, the lectures he gave, and his hospital rotation, he had no social life ... or energy to take part in one, if he had one.

Thank the stars he had Spock.

The thought of falling into bed with Spock ... his strong fingers knowing exactly where the tension was, and massaging it away ... *that* thought gave him the small burst of energy he needed to make it home.

****

It had been a long day, but Spock was feeling energized. He never would have imagined that teaching these young cadets could be so ... invigorating. Knowing that he was helping them become the best individuals they could be ... helping them strive for perfection in all they did ... well, it left him feeling ... euphoric.

Of course, long years of practice helped him keep his feelings hidden from the masses. The only one he was comfortable sharing this kind of intimate knowledge with was Leonard ... and even then, it had taken him many years to do so.

Right now, as he was making his way home, he was looking forward to sharing the news of his latest success ... the nearly perfect score all of his students had with their latest tests. It was a sure sign of their enthusiasm, mixed with his teaching skill and their willingness to learn ... he was very proud of them all.

To celebrate, he had contacted Jim and Carol, and invited them to dinner. He stopped at the market on the way home to get the ingredients he needed for dinner, knowing that he would have plenty of time to get it started before Leonard got home.

He probably should have called him, but he knew that today he had one of his hospital shifts, and did not want to disturb him while he was seeing patients ... in any case, he would appreciate seeing other people. It had been far too long since they had had the chance to go out, or spend any time with Jim and Carol.

The unique blend of spices that greeted McCoy upon entering his home told him that Spock was already home, and preparing dinner. With a grateful sigh, he slipped into his office just off the entryway, and dropped his briefcase on his desk, then made his way into the livingroom, where he surmised Spock to be. "What's for dinner?" he asked, as he entered the room, only to stop short when he noticed that Spock was not alone.

"Hi, Bones," Jim called out, as he and Carol turned as one to greet him. Apparently, they had arrived only moments before, as McCoy noticed that Spock was busily playing bartender. He handed Carol and Jim each a glass, then turned to pour one for McCoy.

As Spock handed the drink to McCoy, he said, "I invited Jim and Carol to dinner. After all, it has been a while since we have seen them."

Taking the drink, McCoy glowered at Spock. "Yes, it has ... I've been quite busy," he said, and glancing around the room, added, "as you all know." He downed his drink in one gulp, then handed the glass back to Spock, saying to the room at large, "I've had a hard day at the hospital ... if you don't mind, I need to go shower and change," and he left the room.

"Spock, if this is a bad time ..." Jim started to say, but was interrupted.

"No, it is not," Spock said, and as he started to follow McCoy into the bedroom, added, "Please, make yourselves comfortable, I will return shortly."

Leaving Jim and Carol alone in the livingroom, Spock found McCoy sitting on the side of the bed, his head in his hands. Spock knelt before him, saying softly, "T'hy'la, forgive me."

McCoy looked up, surprise in his eyes, as he asked, "For what do you ask forgiveness?"

"For whatever it is I have done to offend you," Spock replied ... and learned quite quickly that he had given the wrong answer.

"You have no idea, do you," McCoy said with intensity ... he wanted to lash out at Spock for all the times he had made plans without asking him first ... all the times that he had declined invitations, without asking him first ... all the times that he had spoken for them both, without asking him first. He wanted to lash out at him, but couldn't find the energy right now. Instead, he said, "Think about it, while I go and take a shower."

When Spock returned to the livingroom, Jim asked, "Is everything OK?"

"Yes," Spock said, then with a self-deprecating half-smile, he added, "I suppose I should have called him, and told him we would have guests for dinner."

"Yes, you should have, "Carol said, giving a rather pointed look at Jim, who blushed slightly from the intensity of it. "There's nothing worse than coming home after a long day," she added, returning her attention to Spock, "expecting to just sit back and relax, to discover that you need to be 'up' for company."

"I see," Spock replied, glancing at Jim. "I will, of course, make amends ... later."

"Make sure you do," Jim added with a wink, just as McCoy returned to the livingroom, hair still damp from his shower.

He poured himself another drink, then joined the party. "So, what's the occasion?" he asked, trying to be cheerful.

"My students scored nearly perfect on their latest tests ... their combined average was 98.5%. The highest average ever for a class of cadets," Spock said with a touch of pride, as he heard Jim whistle softly at the announcement.

"I always knew you'd be a great teacher, Spock," Jim said, and raised his glass in a toast. As the others lifted their glasses in turn, he said, "Here's to the next generation of explorers. May they go farther, and see more, than we did ... and continue to learn and grow every day."

"Here, here!" McCoy and Carol said in unison, as they all clicked their glasses together before taking a drink.

Once the toasting was over, Spock stood, and said, "Give me a moment in the kitchen. Dinner will be ready shortly."

After he left, Jim asked, "You alright, Bones?"

"Yeah ... just tired, you know," was his weary reply. Before he could elaborate, Spock called out that dinner was served. As he rose to join the others in the diningroom, he felt a comforting arm across his shoulder, and turned to see Jim there, with a questioning look in his eyes. "I'm OK ... really I am," he said softly to his friend.

"If you ever need to talk, you know I'm there for you, right?" Jim said, as he gave McCoy's shoulder a squeeze before releasing him. Jim knew all about McCoy's past relationships, and how the level of intimacy needed to make them a success seemed to overwhelm him ... he hoped the same wasn't happening now.

"Thanks," McCoy replied, then added softly, "but right now, the one I need to talk to is Spock."

"Agreed," Jim said. With that, the private conversation came to an end, and the four friends sat down to a lovely dinner.

The conversation throughout the meal was light, nobody wanting to talk about work, or anything too controversial or debate-worthy. For a good part of the time, David was the topic of discussion; Jim and Carol were very proud of him, their pride showing in their eyes as they talked about how well he was doing in his classes, or his excellence in sports.

He had adjusted well to having his father come into his life as a young boy. McCoy had wondered if *who* his father was, and what he had done, had made that adjustment just a wee bit easier than if he had been someone 'unknown' ... or if Jim was just a natural when it came to fatherhood. In the end, it really didn't matter.

As they were finishing dessert, Jim noticed that McCoy hadn't spoken in some time ... and glanced over to see that he was nodding off. Quietly pointing this out to Carol and Spock, he whispered, "I think we should be going, Spock."

Spock nodded, and stood, gently touching Leonard on the shoulder as he said, "Yes, it is late."

His words, or perhaps it was his touch, roused McCoy, who started. "Sorry," he said, "didn't mean to doze off on y'all."

"That's alright, Bones," Jim said with a smile, "it's been a long day for all of us."

The four said their goodbyes at the door, and McCoy wearily went into the bedroom, while Spock went to clear away the dishes and clean up the kitchen. When he was done, he was not at all surprised to find Leonard lying on the bed, half dressed and sound asleep.

Gently, he finished undressing his t'hy'la, and lifted him from the bed, to pull back the covers. Kissing him lightly on the lips, he laid him back on the bed, and covered him with the blanket. As he undressed, and prepared himself for bed, he went back to thinking about what Leonard had said to him earlier ... and what Carol had said, as well.

What she had said about 'calling ahead' made sense, but there had to be more to it than that. Leonard's reaction was too severe to be because of one misstep on his part. He needed to meditate on it, so he donned his robe, and went to his private sanctuary.

*****

After several hours of meditation, Spock had found no answers. He went to bed, knowing that he would have to talk to Leonard about this in the morning, and hope that he was in a receptive mood for such a discussion. Keeping that in mind, Spock decided that it wouldn't hurt to 'make amends' for his offence, even if he didn't know what the offence was.

Stripping from his robe, he slipped into bed and spooned Leonard, resting his hand gently on his lovers hip. As he lightly made circles with his fingers, he bent his head to his t'hy'la's neck, and began to kiss him. He let his tongue and teeth playfully explore around his lovers earlobe, while the circles he made on his hip grew ever larger. When a soft sigh escaped from Leonard's lips, Spock knew he was receptive to further exploration, and let his hand wander ... soon encountering Leonard's erection.

He took it in hand, knowing exactly what his t'hy'la liked, as he brought him ever closer to fulfilment. As Leonard rolled onto his back, Spock took advantage of the added access to his body, and began to kiss him all over, moving slowly down his body, ever closer to his ultimate destination ... then taking the fully engorged penis into his mouth, he sucked it deeply into his throat.

Spock's timing, as always, was perfect. Leonard came the instant those hot lips closed around the base of his cock. As the sucking intensified, he thrust his hips upwards, forcing himself deeper into the hot mouth of his lover as he came.

When he was spent, he rolled onto his side, facing Spock. "Sorry I was so grumpy earlier," he said.

"I am the one who should be apologizing," Spock replied, and then continued, "I know I should have called you to let you know we were having guests."

"Yes, you should have," Leonard replied, then added, "but that isn't the only problem, you know."

"I had surmised as much," Spock admitted. Still perplexed, he went on to say, "T'hy'la, you mean the world to me. I want this to work between us."

"As do I," McCoy interrupted.

"Then we must always be open with one another," Spock went on, adding, "I cannot make amends for my offense, if I do not know what the offense is ... you must enlighten me."

"I know," Leonard started, then had to pause. Thinking back to his reaction earlier, he realized that what had bothered him so much was that Spock had been acting exactly the way he, himself, had acted with his wife ... being the dominant partner, making him feel less than adequate in this relationship. In some ways, he was more annoyed with himself for his reaction, than he was with Spock for being who he is ... an 'alpha-male' trying to make the most of their relationship.

McCoy tried to put this all into words, but kept faltering. Finally, he said, "it's very complicated," and said nothing more.

"Perhaps, if we joined minds," Spock suggested. A mind meld was the one thing they had not done while making love ... apparently, it was too intimate an act for Leonard to accept just yet. Spock knew that it would make their sexual pleasure far more intense, but he would not press. After all, in a loving, sexual relationship, a simple meld could lead to a more permanent bonding ... a bonding that was for life.

Leonard knew that, and there was a hint of trepidation in his eyes, but after a moments hesitation, he said, "Yes, we should meld. That's the only way I can convey my ... apprehension." and with that, he sat up, sitting crossed-legged on the bed facing Spock, who did likewise. Spock reached out, and placed his fingers in the traditional meld points ... he met little resistance, as their minds slowly became one.

All of Leonard's misgivings over their future together spilled into Spock's mind, focusing almost entirely on his reaction earlier that day. Spock instantly discovered his mistake, and flashes of every other time he had made a similar one since they had been living together ... and then there were flashes of Leonard making the exact same ones, with his wife so many years in the past.

Suddenly, everything was clear, and Spock smiled. He assured Leonard that their relationship would not suffer the same fate ... and made a promise to never speak for him again, or make plans without consultation.

McCoy smiled in return, knowing that Spock would keep his word.
