Juvenile Diabetes-One Child's Story
My Name is Billy and I have diabetes. I am four years old and have diabetes since I was one. I have to have shots everyday and sometimes they hurt. I am not sick and can run and play like everyone else though. When my sugar is high I shake and my head hurts  When it is low I want to go to sleep. When my sugar is low I have to eat sugar and sometimes people have to make me eat it. I get scared when it is low because I see monsters.
As the caregiver for the child who told this story, I have to say four years ago, I knew very little about juvenile diabetes. I was approached by his family who was needing childcare for him when the school year started again. I shared in the first interview my apprehensions about giving shots, but told them I was willing to learn.

The family provided me with brochures, books, and reading materials to learn. I surfed the web for hours on end learning and taking in everything that I could. Finally the day came for him to start. Mom came with him for the first few times and worked with me measuring carbs, insulin, and going over everything that I would need to know.

The first shot was scary and I was scared that I would hurt him. Today it is just a part of our daycare routine. We have good days and we have had a few bad days...BUT, I have to say that this child has blessed my life and showed me so much about love and the person who he is inside. Diabetes is a part of his life, but it isn't him. He is a wonderful thriving 7  year old who I am blessed to know and have in my care.

We have had more battles with outside organizations to get them to accept this child's condition and work with us on accomodating his schedules than anything to do with the diabetes itself. I will be including links for further reading as time permits and sharing more about this little guy.
