ANDREW ROBERTSON - Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Andrew is a Visual Arts & Computer teacher at a 7th and 8th grade inner-city school in Toronto. When he gets a chance he likes to travel. This past summer (2001) he spent 25 days in Spain.
"I am a collector of
masks from around the world and I seem to like sculptural things and
architecture. Thus, demons and gargoyles on the sides of buildings are
right up my alley. The spookier the better."
CURRENT EQUIPMENT - Canon AE-1 with a new 100-300mm zoom lens. This camera has had huge sentimental value for Andrew since he bought it when he was 11 years old. He is now 32.

A gargoyle located on the main part of the Cathedral in Barcelona.

All of these gargoyles and grotesques were shot on location at and around the Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona, Spain.

Just feet from a famous Barcelona site in the heart of the Gothic Quarter (Barrio Gotico,) I found this cool guy.

 |
The oldest Gothic cathedral in Barcelona has a beautiful courtyard that must be seen. Partially for its immense beauty, buy mostly for the cool gargoyles. A high rod iron fence prevents people from entering the courtyard; so getting a good shot is quite difficult. The tourist on location has to resort to wandering under the high halls that follow the perimeter of this most beautiful courtyard. These images were shot on a Sunday morning. Mass was in service and the sounds of people singing the hymns filled the courtyard and added to the atmosphere.

Just meters from a beautifully decorated passageway connecting one building with another in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, you can find this gargoyle. It stands about 20 feet upon the side of a building and is just one of about 7 that run along the top of a building.

Although not a gargoyle, I found a great plaza just a three-minute walk from the cathedral. There are four different figures supporting a fountain. Each figure has a waterspout in their mouth. This one was my favorite.

On one side of the cathedral in Granada, Spain, one passes from a main street through a large iron gate. 30-40 feet up on one side of the cathedral (at the side entrance) there are about 10 gargoyles. These are all samples of these gargoyles.
