“Why does summer vacation have to end when you grow up?”

(Definition essay)

Summer Vacation – the dictionary defines vacation as an area with recreational attractions and facilities for vacationist’s. But mention the mere words of summer vacation to a person and the dictionary definition will be blown away. A glow on their face will immediately come about. As we increase in age our thoughts of summer vacation become more longing than the next. The constant need for a long period of time to; relax, have fun and enjoy the beautiful environment. But as these emotions get stronger summer vacation begins to fade away. Beginning with nursery school and up to college the expectations get greater and the vacations get fewer. College arrives and credits may need to be made up so you stay an extra month. Years later you get your first job and now there is no summer vacation there are only days off. At one point in ones life the summer vacation’s end and the real world begins. Why is it we must adjust to this world of growing up with summer vacations and than getting older and letting them disappear. Everyone deserves a summer vacation whether it is at a young or an old age!

The bell rings everyone jumps out of their chair running out of the school into the hot sun, ready for a fun filled summer.  Many movies portray this feeling of excitement and seem to emphasize it to the max. They show the scene where books and papers are thrown into the hallways; students are dashing through the school doors and entering the wonderful world of summer. The eyes of younger children see it as play dates all day where as teenagers see it as no school, no stress, and going out every night. College students see it as their last years of summer vacation and adults/parents see it as working and finding a place to send

their children to day camps, sleep away camps, or any other summer activities. No matter the age summer vacations still convey those happy feelings. Sitting by the pool reading books and knowing that each day you can do whatever you please, those are feeling only summer vacations can bring.

Nursery school is almost like a summer vacation all year round. Playing in the courtyard, eating snacks, nap times and early dismissal is an ideal life. One we all wish we could go back to. First grade, second grade, third grade, forth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade, and you finally arrive middle school. In just these couple of years the countdowns of how many days till summer will begin.  Finally the last bell of the year rings everyone jumps up with excitement knowing that now there will be no school for the next two months. High school arrives and the stresses become greater, and the vacation seems shorter. The next step is college, school semesters can run into summers and you learn to adjust to the year round work schedule. When college graduation comes it is now a step into the real world, where summer vacations aren’t heard of. The childhood happiness of the word still comes to thought but only brings sadness knowing that those days are over.

So why is it fair that as we grow up and get more stressed with life’s rocky roads we must lose vacation time? There isn’t any just reasoning, except for the fact that at one point there is a time in ones life’s where responsibility comes into play, and a person must have priorities in their life, and give in some of their summer fun to working. If only there was a way to bring summer vacation back to older generations so they could enjoy it just as they did when they were kids. As years go by we must remember to enjoy each summer vacation as though it is our last, because before we know it those hot, lemonade filled summer days will be over. Maybe the dictionary definition should be changed to a cheerful, warm day with much happiness but never as much as those past childhood years.
