Three Injured In Grenade Explosion In Ambon
Ambon ( Berita ) : Three people were injured when a grenade exploded in Lateri village
in Baguala subdistrict here early Saturday.
A witness, Remon Somelo, said before the explosion he saw a motorcyclist moving at
high speed and throwing something at a group of motorbike taxis (ojek).
Seconds later, he heard a huge explosion but the unidentified motorcyclist had
already disappeared in the direction of downtown Ambon.
Creating a hole of 50 centimers in diameter in the pavement, the explosion was also
heard by people living four to five kilometers from the scene.
Mewnhile many Local residence were tightening security in their respective
neighborhood to anticipate possible unrest in the upcoming anniversary of separatist
group Republic of South Maluku (RMS)in April 25.
The Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) had since 2000 beeen fighting for independence.
The front's leaders, namely Alex Manuputty and Semmy Wailerunny, were sentenced
to 4.5 years in jail for provoking people to raise the separatist group's flag on April
2002.
Wailerunny is serving his jail term in Jakarta while Manuputty is still at large. He was
allegedly hiding in the United States.
Dozens of RMS supporters were detained by local police for further legal processing
after they raised the RMS flag last February 18. ( ant )
