Elgin Bridge

This was completed in 1929 and named after the then governor General of India, Lord Elgin. As this was the first bridge to be built across the River, the two roads leading to it were named North Bridge Road and South Bridge Road accordingly.

Elgin Bridge also served to link the Chinese community on the south side of the River to the Indian merchants of High Street on the north side.

Coleman Bridge

The Coleman Bridge was completed in 1886 and named after its Irish architect George Coleman. It was considered one of the most attractive bridges spanning the river. The elegance of the bridge is reflected in the ornamental ironwork on the railings along the sides, the shallow arches and the graceful iron gas lamps. This beautiful colonial edifice had to be demolished because it was too narrow to cope with the heavy traffic flow between Hill Street and New Bridge Road. However, due to its historical value, several of the bridge's distinctive features such as the columns and lamp standers have been recreated and incorporated into the present Coleman Bridge which was completed in May 1990.
