Auction Game

Numbers & scanning for common grammar mistakes
Suitable for 2nd year and up (limited quantity of 1st year material).

Materials:
12 large copies of the worksheet (filled in).
Huge amounts of fake money (recommended 300 copies).
The twenty sentences written out on large card or strips of paper.
Plastic Hello Kitty hammer (optional).

Time:
Generally a whole class - 15 minutes for groups to scan, 5 minutes to explain, 20 minutes for auction, 10 minutes to check authenticity (whether sentences are 'fakes' or 'real').

Preparation:
Fill in the worksheet with 20 sentences using whatever target grammar you prefer (some example sentences are shown below), but note that approximately half of them should incorporate grammar mistakes of some kind (avoid using too many spelling mistakes). Photocopy the completed worksheet 12 times, and also write the twenty sentences onto large card - these will be the actual 'items' on sale in the auction.

Auction Game - scanning for mistakes

Procedure:
Split the class into 6 groups, and hand out 2 copies of the worksheet to each group. Students check through the sentences for mistakes, using textbooks for reference if necessary, and mark on the worksheet which sentences are 'fakes' and which are 'genuine'. If half of each group scans sentences 1 to 10, while the other half scans 11 to 20, then you can save yourself some time (hence the use of two worksheets per group)!

Next hand out the money to each group - a suggested amount would be fifty copies each, and check they can actually say the numbers in English! Students then compete to buy the sentences that they believe to be 'genuine', while trying not to bid for 'fakes'. Hand over the large card version of each sentence as they are sold.

After the auction, go through all of the sentences to check for 'fakes', which are then 'repossessed' by the auction house. The group with the most 'genuine' sentences at the end of the check become the auction winners (tie-breaks can be decided by which group has more money remaining).
